Martlets Open with Tie vs Pope Francis
After just three days of practice, the boys JV squad welcomed Pope Francis’ varsity team for an early-in-the-season scrimmage on a cold and windy March afternoon. It was a defensive battle and Westminster’s two goalies–Derrick Logan ‘27 and Jordan Pham ‘27–made clutch saves all afternoon. Both teams struggled to control the ball in their offensive zone in the first half, but Westminster’s offense–led by a skilled group Attackmen (Aidan O’Callaghan ‘26, Andrew Sala ‘26, and Matt Gregorski ‘27)--eventually found its rhythm, netting four goals and using good ball movement to create many other scoring opportunities. Auggie Jiranek ‘27 and Ty Lambert ‘27 both showed impressive grit in the midfield, competing hard on face-offs and playing lots of minutes. Westminster held onto a 4-3 lead late into the fourth quarter before Pope Francis tied the game with a buzzer beater. While the Martlets would have liked to secure the win, the coaches were very pleased with the team’s effort and attitude and look forward to another challenging game on Thursday against the Longmeadow Lancers.
