Martlets Fall to Deerfield

The Martlets traveled north on Friday night to play Deerfield. Deerfield has had a good season and was already locked into the Large School tournament heading into the game. They were however still battling for a home playoff spot and needed a win against the Black and Gold to secure it. Deerfield came out swinging in the first and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. The Martlets staggered back from the ropes and found their skating legs towards the end of the first period. Despite some good looks, the Martlets were kept off the scoreboard in the first. The second period was a good period of prep hockey. The Martlets played a more sound defensive game and sustained a better pace of play. The Deerfield netminder made some nice saves in the second to keep Westminster off the board. Deerfield would go on to score the next two goals leaving the Martlets in a 4-0 hole with just under 15 minutes to play in the third. The team displayed some good Grit and competed hard regardless of the deficit and thanks to Timmy Donohue '27 and Quinn Pine '25 the Black and Gold cut the Deerfield lead to 2 with just about 10 to play. The Martlets pressed hard but could not find the next one and ultimately fell on the road 6-2.
