Martlets Defeat Kent

The Martlets were excited to be able to hop on the road with JV to play against Kent. We knew it would be a close match going 4-3 in either direction based on New Englands and how both of our seasons have been playing out. At the top, Sophia Lazor ‘27 fought tooth and nail against the Kent number 1. They had long nail biting rallies where Sophia went for every shot and used height to her advantage to stay in the game. She lost in 3 games but it was some of the most impressive playing she’s had all season. At number 2 and 3, Elle Wilson ‘26 and Margaret Dilks ‘24 put up a good fight too making sure they didn’t give up on any balls and had strong serves and returns their whole match. Kent had a very strong top 3 and we knew coming in that would be where the real hard work would have to be.
At number 4 Emily Fonner ‘26 had a rough start in the first game but after some good advice from Dilks, reminding her of her strengths Emily was able to lock in and win the next 3 games using her great drives and cross kills to her advantage. This was similar for number 6 Chase Hager ‘26 who was down in the first but used advice from her teammates and coach to finish strong in the fourth game and once she had control it was hard to take it from her. At number 7 and 8 Natasha Johnson ‘27 and Nora Davis ‘24 were able to secure their wins in 3 games starting strong and ending strong taking all the advice between games and playing to their strengths.
Lastly, playing at number 5 Alice Tao was able to sway the 4-3 win over to the Martlets in 3 games after having an overall tie in matches 3-3 on her birthday!!!!!! It was a great win for Alice and the team as a whole. Because Kent had nine players, Mein Yin Ren ‘25, got to play best 2-3 and even though she didn’t win she played very well for someone who has not played as much the last couple weeks. Everyone worked together to pull it off with support and sage advice. The win has the Martlets excited to face off against St. Marks on Saturday!
