Martlets Defeat Williston

The Martlets returned from long weekend ready to battle with Williston. Westminster came out strong with Mark Yang ‘26, Phil Zhang ‘24 and Daniel Edwards ‘24 all winning in 3 games. At #1, Yang came out strong before fighting through a close second game which he won 13-11. He used the momentum from this close second game to quickly take the third game 11-1 for the three game win. At #3, Phil played great squash to win in quick fashion, 11-5, 11-3 and 11-7. #5 Daniel matched him, winning 11-8, 11-2 and 11-6. To round out the first round of matches, Steven Xie ‘26 at #7 dropped a tight first game 10-12 before rebounding to drop a total of 10 points in the final 3 games. After the match was sealed, we continued with the second round of matches. At #6, Charlie Raymond ‘24 won his match in quick fashion, dropping a total of 17 points between the 3 games. At #2 Robert Yalda ‘24 also dropped his first game 10-12, but rebounded to take the next three games 11-5, 11-4 and 11-6. Finally, at #4, Ryan Sohn ‘27 dropped the first game 3-11 before coming back and taking the next 2 games 11-6 and 11-3. After dropping the fourth game 10-12, he went down big in the final game before coming back and making the final game close, which he ended up losing 9-11. Connor Scollans ‘26 played good squash to win his match at #8 in 3 games, 11-6 12-10 and 11-6. Grant Owen ‘24 played a very competitive match at #9. After dropping the first 11-7, the duo each saved several game balls before Grant took the second game 16-14. He used this momentum to win an 11-9 third game, but dropped the fourth in a close affair 12-14. The fifth game was also a battle, but unfortunately Grant dropped this game 9-11. He was kind enough to play a second match later in the day so that another Williston player could get a match. After winning the first game 11-6, they split 11-9 games in the next two and Grant sealed the 2-1 win in the shorter ⅔ game format. The Martlets will be back in action on Saturday when we travel to AVon to play Avon and Choate in our second “tri” match of the year.
