Martlets Fall to Pomfret

The Martlets traveled to challenge the Pomfret Griffins in our first game back from the winter long weekend. We started strong, establishing a solid pick-and-roll game between Jermaine James ‘24 and Austin Black ‘24 against an aggressive man-to-man defense. But we struggled from the perimeter, hitting one three in the first half in contrast to Pomfret’s six, while turnovers prevented us from maintaining momentum. Going into halftime down by fifteen, it was possible to make a comeback if we hit some threes, continued to utilize pick-and-roll, reduced our turnovers, and improved on the boards against a guard-heavy team. However, the struggles of the first half continued into the second. Pomfret continued to play good defense and hit shots from the outside while their aggression continued to disrupt our flow, causing more turnovers and further stagnating the offense. Despite the loss, excellent individual play still shined through, especially from the bench. Austin Black ‘24 led the offense for the second straight game with eighteen points while working hard on the defensive end. Jake Carbone ‘24, Declan Cody ‘25, and Zoumana Ouattara ‘25 played good defense coming off the bench, helping to slow down the Pomfret attack. We travel to The Frederick Gunn School this coming Saturday for a rematch.
