Martlets Fall in OT

The Martlets hosted the Pelicans from Loomis on a snowy Friday evening. Coming off a hard-fought OT Loomis on Wednesday, the Black and Gold were excited to have another opportunity to compete on Friday night. The Pelicans had the Martlets on their heels in the first and carried the play. Despite being outshot in the first frame, the Martlets weathered the storm thanks to netminder Matteo De Luca who turned away bid after bid to keep the Pelicans off the board. Towards the end of the period, the Martlets struck first off a nice offensive zone sequence that ultimately ended up with Michael Bianco '24 burying a rebound to give the Martlets the 1-0 lead. We found our skating legs in the second period, managed the puck better around the blue lines, and we were able to sustain more zone time in the second period compared to the first. Derek Rhodes '25 scored the second of the day for the Martlets to give us the 2-0 lead midway through the second. The Pelicans answered back on a power play to cut the lead back to 1 before the period ended. With 18 minutes to play, and up by 1, the team knew their best period had to be the final one. Loomis tied it up on another power play with just under 5 minutes to play. Moments later, Easton Masse '25 collected a nice feed from Nico Tsatas '24 and beat the Pelican netminder to give the Black and Gold the 3-2 lead with just under 3 to play. Unfortunately, the Pelicans capitalized on a costly turnover with just over a minute to play to tie the game at 3, and then off a broken play deep in our zone, the Pelicans scored the final goal of the day in OT to grab the win. Lots to like about last night's effort but plenty to improve upon. De Luca was great in the net again stopping 42 of 46 shots.
