Martlets Split Two Matches

The Martlets traveled to Pomfret with Varsity for a double match against Pomfret and Exeter.
The Pomfret match was a very competitive match, one with many twists and turns. Ryan Sohn ‘27 played some good points but lost his match at #3, while Charlie Raymond ‘24 played good squash to win his match in 3 games. After the 1-1 start, Steven Xie ‘26 at #7 seemed poised to take his match in three games before his opponent rallied to take the third 14-12. Steven rebounded, and came out strong to take the fourth game 11-7. Playing at #1, Mark Yang ‘26 started out very strong to take an 11-5 first game. However, his opponent rebounded with some great squash to take the next three games. With the match knotted at 2-2, Robert Yalda ‘24, Phil Zhang ‘24 and Daniel Edwards ‘24 all played highly competitive 5 game matches. Robert dropped the first two games at #2 before coming back to take an impressive last three games, 11-7, 11-9 and 11-9 to give the Martlets the 3-2 edge. Meanwhile, Daniel and Phil split the first 4 games in their respective matches before entering the fifth game at the same time. Both players showed that they had been the better players all match, taking routine fifth game wins. While this was a 5-2 win for the martles, they all knew that this could have certainly gone the other way.

Shortly after the completion of the Pomfret match, the boys returned to the courts playing against the talented Exeter team. Although only one martlet was able to pull out a victory, this was a competitive match all around with many matches going to 4 or 5 games. Ben Swift ‘25 lost a very competitive match at #1, losing the deciding fifth game. Mark Yang ‘26 and Phil Zhang ‘24, at #2 and #5 respectively, lost high competitive 4 game matches both including games that could have gone the other way. Charlie Raymmond ‘24, Ryan Sohn ‘27, and Robert Yalda ‘24 (#6, #4, #3) all played some good points throughout their match but dropped 3 game encounters. Finally, kudos to Daniel Edwards ‘24 for pulling out our only team victory. After dropping the first 2 games, he rebounded and played great squash for the last 3 to win those games 11-5, 11-9 and 11-7. This was a good day of squash for the Martlets, providing them a good test against competitive teams, as for many of them it was one of only a few times they have played 2 matches in a day. We are back on the road on Saturday when the boys travel to Trinity Pawling.
