Martlets Open Season with Win

The Martlets start the season off strong- first game, first win!  After only two team practices Westminster traveled to Southborough, MA to take on St. Marks.  For the first half of the 1st period the Martlets were working to find their footing.  The team settled in once Olivia Gordon ‘24  cut out of the offensive corner, cut across the top of the circle, and placed a wrist shot into the top right corner of the net.  The Black and Gold continued to put pressure on offensively and just four minutes later Bella Zapata’s ‘27 slid the puck off a defenders foot for her first career goal and put the Martlets up 2-0.  With under two minutes left in the 1st the Martlets landed in the penalty box resulting in a 5-on-3 power play for St. Marks.  A strong penalty kill was cut short when St. Marks was able to muscle in a rebound past PG netminder Julia Matyas, making the score 2-1 going into intermission.  The Martlets started the second period strong by killing off the remaining 5-on-3 penalty kill.  After some back and forth play, Adrienne Hall ‘25 scored a power play goal increasing the lead to 3-1.  Just a couple minutes later Hall tallied another by chipping the puck past the opposing defender and breaking free onto a 2-on-1.  Hall beat the lone defender with speed and made a smooth move across the net before sliding the puck past the goalie.  The St. Mark’s team didn’t give up, down 4-1, they continued to pressure and cut the Martlets lead to two.  The third period left the score locked and the Martlets took their first win of the season 4-2.  The team is back at it on Saturday at 2:00pm for their first home game against Hill.
