Martlets Fall to Gov's

Westminster hosted Governor’s Academy for their final game of the regular season. The Martlets celebrated their seven sixth formers - Sydney Courtmanche, Margaret Dilks, Olivia Emerson, Olivia Gordon, Cassie Goundrey, Margee Mahoney, and Sophia Peterson. Westminster started strong, disrupting many Governor’s passes through the midfield and turning any opportunity into a chance at the cage. Gordon and Emerson both did a fantastic job on the press in the first quarter, clogging up lanes on the right side of the field and quickly transitioning into the attacking circle. The Governor’s goalie made several big stops to keep Westminster off the board and Governor’s capitalized on their only chance of the quarter when they scored on a penalty corner. Westminster kept the pressure on in the second quarter, outshooting Governor’s 4-0 and capitalizing on their own chance right from the start. Talia Ondy ‘25 took advantage of a quick self start inside the attacking  25 and sent a ball in towards Emerson. Emerson redirected the ball to the stick of Gordon who turned and sent a hard shot to the back of the net to knot the score at 1-1. Westminster continued to dominate leading up to halftime, with Liza Merrill ‘25 earning a timeout corner that the Martlets unfortunately could not capitalize on. The second half saw a more balanced game in the midfield, with both teams earning corners and shots to net when taking advantage of fast breaks. Courtmanche played a pivotal role in the midfield for the Martlets, stepping up on several 50/50 balls and using her speed to step up into the offensive end in an attempt to get something going on the attack. Hadley Crowther ‘25 also played a key role in today’s midfield game, stepping into a new role and dominating both sides of the field. Cassie Goundey stood tall in net, making a few key saves to keep the score tied. Heading into the fourth quarter, Westminster knew it needed to find more urgency in the offensive end in order to turn their possession into scoring chances. Gordon, Emerson, and Ondy each had shots turned aside by the talented Gov’s keeper early on in the final frame before Governor’s had a few chances on their own. The game would come down to the final minutes, as Governor’s earned a penalty corner with a minute and 15 seconds left, scoring off of a deflection on the back post. The Martlets again found themselves down late and made an attempt for a final offensive push to tie the game, but it was unfortunately too late and the clock expired. Westminster ends the regular season with an impressive 13-4 record and awaits to hear if they will earn a spot in the NEPSAC Class A tournament being played next week. A very big thank you to the seven members of the Class of 2024 and their families for all of the time and effort they have put into Westminster Field Hockey over the past few years. The team hopes that this incredible group can have a few more days to play together!
