Martlets Fall to Brunswick

The JV Boys put in a thrilling end of season effort against a complete Brunswick JV team. Brunswick raced to a 4-0 lead only for Alex Do ‘24 to fire past the keeper right before half time to give the home crowd something to celebrate. The Martlets looked most dangerous on the break, so it was no surprise when Mason Abbate ‘24 deftly collected a long pass forty yards from goal, broke past the Brunswick line, then finished via a fortunate deflection into the bottom far corner. The second half saw a positive reaction from the Martlets, with Junian Kim ‘26 exhibiting a relentless dedication to disrupting the Brunswick passing game. Junian has been on a good run of form these past two weeks, more than earning his starting positions. He has been a selfless runner going forward, and always looks to quickly transition from the tackle to an attack. Teddy Russell ‘26 has proven himself an industrious scalpel in the attacking line. Teddy’s teamwork distinguishes him on the field, and he has greatly improved his understanding of space, possibly so he doesn’t have to hear his coach constantly trying to move him around the pitch. Teddy combines well with his team mates at both ends of the pitch, and is always ready to make another lung bursting sprint for the team. Working against him and Junian in the same action is a nightmare for any opponent. The final mentions are reserved for our tireless captains Daniel Edwards ‘24 and Kimi Weng ‘24. Daniel averts so many crises in the backline every game, and he does so with little drama. Daniel augmented his defensive runs with a few probing runs in the other direction and caught the Brunswick midfield by surprise with his touch and eye for a pass. Kimi has been a peerless Martlet throughout the season, dogged in defense, sharp in offense, and always willing to make another run or throw his body into the line of fire. Kimi showed his intelligence with his off the ball running, always posing a threat. Kimi is truly a selfless player and has dragged the team, often kicking and screaming, over the finish line. He was unlucky not to add to the scoreboard this afternoon, he more than deserved to finish with that flourish.
