Martlets Defeat Berkshire

Westminster hosted the Berkshire Bears on a busy Saturday afternoon on campus. It was the Martlets third game of the week and first home game in four games, so the team was excited to be back on Hovey Field. Westminster was looking for a fast start and they did just that, scoring less than three minutes into the game. Olivia Gordon ‘24 started things off, receiving a pass from Talia Ondy ‘25 in the circle, touching the ball around the goalie and sending it to the back of the cage. Westminster did a solid job controlling the pace for the rest of the quarter, but could not add to the score. The second quarter saw the two teams trade goals as Berkshire got on the board just ninety seconds in before Ondy put one to the back of the cage minutes later to give the lead back to the Martlets. Westminster took the one goal lead into the second half and looked to have more urgency in the circle. Five minutes into the third quarter, Olivia Emerson ‘24 scored the final tally of the day when she knocked home the ball after a broken penalty corner. The Martlets earned 16 corners on the day, but struggled to get past the strong Berkshire defense. Berkshire fought back, and had several attempts to make it a one goal lead, but Cassie Goundrey ‘24 led the defense with many great saves. Sophia Peterson earned the Player of the Game hat for her hard work in the midfield. Peterson, Allysen Whitehead ‘25, Sydney Courtmanche ‘24, Hadley Crowther ‘25, Liza Merrill ‘25, and Ondy all did a superb job in the midfield transitioning the ball up field and recovering back quickly on defense. The team will use next week to get healthy after a busy two week stretch before preparing for their final regular season game next Saturday against Governor's Academy.
