Martlets Tie Rumsey

After a sunny Hill Holiday on Tuesday, the Quad Squad woke up to a cold and rainy Wednesday for their road trip to perennial powerhouse Rumsey Hall. As the Martlets pulled into a windy Washington Depot, the rain turned to sleet and then to snow. Undeterred by the challenging conditions, Westminster came out with energy and focus. After Rumsey Hall scored an early goal on a fluke bounce, the Martlets battled back and evened the score when Ethan Villacis ’27 beat his defender down the left sideline and drilled the ball into the right corner of the net. Fifteen minutes later, Auggie Jiranek ’27 won the ball in the midfield and passed it to Timmy Donohue ’27 who beat the goalie to the ball and tapped it into the back of the net to put the Martlets in the lead. As the sun came out just before halftime, the skilled, disciplined, and tough Rumsey Hall squad evened the score and eventually took the lead thirteen minutes into the second half. Westminster battled hard after that setback, competing to stay in the game even as they struggled to create scoring chances. Eventually their grit paid off as Ethan Villacis ’27 secured the ball on the left sideline, forcing his way through the defense and finding the back of the net in almost identical fashion to his first goal. Led by strong goaltending from Ethan Hernandez ’27, Westminster’s defense held off Rumsey’s final effort, securing a hard-earned tie against their toughest opponent of the season. Hunter Grace ‘27 continued to lead the way with energy and intensity and Derrick Logan ‘27 played his best game of the year, sending several booming kicks from the back line onto Rumsey Hall’s side. The Quad Squad will complete their community service project on Thursday afternoon before getting back to work in preparation for Avon Old Farms next Wednesday.
