Martlets Defeat Canterbury

The Martlets played against the Saints of Canterbury this past Saturday. A beautiful fall day, Westminster was eager to play their second game of the week. The team came out strong with plenty of energy and grit. Looking to attack and make runs in open spaces, Westminster was able to score early on in the first half. Within the first ten minutes, Haley Cramer ‘24 played a great long ball to Elysse Cumberland ‘24. Cumberland, after dribbling up the right side of the field and into the box, crossed the ball to Mia Fluckiger ‘26 who found the back of the net with a one-touch finish. Shortly thereafter, Cramer received the ball right outside the 18 from Jillian Gregorski ‘24. Picking her head up and seeing the open space, Cramer slotted the ball to Fluckiger for the goal. With 22 minutes left in the half, Gregorski found Cramer wide-open in the midfield. After a few dribbles, Cramer fired a shot from a distance of 30 yards and successfully found the upper corner of the net. A few minutes later, Sarah Lenox ‘24  scored her first goal of the season off of a great leading ball into the box from Gregorski. While the Martlets entered the second half up 4-0, the Saints did not give up and scored within the first two minutes. Westminster responded with a goal scored by Kaitlyn McQueeney ‘24 and assisted by Lenox. Open in the box, McQueeeney took one touch and placed a driven ball into the far corner of the Saint net. The Martlets made the score 6-1 with another goal from Blessing Kieh ‘24. After a deflection in the box, Kieh swiftly moved past a Canterbury defender and found the back of the net. With momentum on her side, Kieh scored another just moments afterward off of a great long ball from McQueeney to make the score 7-1. With 18 minutes left in the match, Canterbury scored a second goal but Westminster scored the final goal of the game. After receiving the ball from Cramer and dribbling into the box, Gregorski placed the ball into the back of the Canterbury net. With this win, the Martlets are 10-1-1 on the season. The team looks forward to their next game against Taft this upcoming Wednesday, November 1st. The game will be played at 2:30 PM at home.
