Martlets Defeat Granby

The Quad Squad had a nice bounceback win today in our rematch with the Granby High School freshman team. We controlled the ball for the first part of the first half and got out to a 2-0 lead. Brooks Berthiaume opened the scoring with his first goal of the year, a high, bounding volley from near midfield that took advantage of the extra-firm playing surface in Granby. Berthiaume tallied his second point of the game 15 minutes later with an assist to left wing Ethan Villacis, who beat the goalie to the short side with a left-footed rocket just outside the 12-yard mark. From that point on, however, Granby pretty much dominated the action with their superior touch and aggressive play on lofted shots and passes. Fortunately for us, we had Ethan Hernandez in net, and he chose today to have the best game of his career. Ethan was as aggressive and communicative as he has been all season, and although it's sometimes hard to tell what counts as a save in soccer, he definitely got his hands on the ball over 25 times on the game. Ethan did have some help: Derrick Logan played through some minor injuries and teamed up with Rohan Sitpathy and Enoch Olaosebikan in the back wall to keep the Granby attack at bay. We were not without scoring opportunities in the second half, but the efforts of Tim Donahue, Villacis, Jordan Pham and Hunter Grace just couldn't find the mark. In the end, we scored enough to win the game, and that's all that matters. We'll turn our attention to next Wednesday's game and what promises to be our toughest opponent of the year, Rumsey Hall.
