Martlets Defeat Canterbury

The JV Boys enjoyed their Fall afternoon with a drawn out 3-1 win over Canterbury School. Connor Scollans ‘26 set the tone early with a looping shot from the edge of the box. Connor was his usual energetic self and put in a typically effervescent defensive performance. Connor has steadily improved his decision making and proved himself a critical team player this afternoon. Mason Abbate ‘24 scored the second to put the Martlets ahead once more after the half. Mason’s initial touch and close control won him the game this afternoon. The Canterbury keeper was up to the Mason’s challenge, but Mason is unlucky not to be walking away with a hattrick today. He kept finding dangerous pockets of space with his off the ball movement, and a delightful first touch created even more danger for the Canterbury backline. Mark Yang ‘26 finished our scoring, sneaking a shot through right before the final whistle. The third goal was a just reward for another intense performance from Mark. The second half saw Mark engage more with his teammates, and he was the source of much of our creative work. A special mention is reserved for Daniel Edwards ‘24, who is quickly becoming the patron saint of JV soccer coaches. Daniel continues to be the emergency hero for the defense, chasing down dangerous runs and keeping the ball away from the Westminster goal. He does all this cleanly and with good sportsmanship, representing the best of the Martlet program. The whole team rose to the challenge this afternoon, and put in a solid effort. The scoreline disguises what was a more evenly poised game, but the Westminster boys should be proud of their efforts today.
