Martlets Win!

For the first time since October 9 of 2021, the Thirds Girls’ Soccer team of Westminster School won a game. Excellent practices on Monday and Tuesday led to a superb effort on the field throughout both halves of the match against Miss Porter’s. This was a true team effort, and coaches Palala and Chrzanowski are so proud of the work the entire team put forth to create the victory. Midway through the first half, a throw-in by Melody El-Amin Stewart ‘27 snuck all the way down the line to Sophie McKenna ‘27. Her ensuing shot was blocked. However, the opposing goalie’s throw back was intercepted by Sophie, who quickly returned the ball directly into the net. Twelve minutes into the second half, an incredible possession by Melody El-Amin Stewart resulted in a three-quarters field drive towards the opposing net, through multiple defenders. A short pass later to Sophie McKenna resulted in the second goal of the game. Sophie and Melody were not the only stars of this game however. Both Lily Shuster ‘27 and Lily Raskind ‘25 each played a half as the keeper, and combined for many saves and excellent ball return, resulting in multiple Westminster possessions. On the defensive side, Grace Doherty ‘24, Simon McSherry ‘25, Juliette Smatt, ‘25, Annabelle Krieger ‘27, Lulu Dawson ‘27 and Aerin Kim ‘27 played excellent defense, pressuring several breakaways by Miss Porter’s into missed shots or saves. Rotavia Butler ‘27 seemed to be everywhere on the field and aided in multiple defensive stops as well as offensive drives as a midfielder. The victory was an incredible boost for the team and they hope to carry the momentum into their match against Suffield on Saturday.
