Martlets Tie Suffield

After an extended preseason, Westminster’s Fourth Boys soccer team, affectionately known as the “Quad Squad,” took the field for their first game against the Suffield Tigers. On a perfect fall afternoon, everyone stepped up and gave their best effort (especially Coach Bryan Tawney who filled in to ref) in a competitive back-and-forth match that ended in a tie. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead, but the Martlets responded quickly as speedy midfielder Ryan Sohn ‘27 dribbled the ball through several Suffield defenders and found Tim Donohue ‘27 who drilled the ball into the net. Suffield scored again at the start of the second half, but yet again the Martlets kept playing hard and eventually found the back of the net when Caden Cramer ‘27 kicked the ball high and into the box and Hunter Grace ‘27 made and agressive and athletic play to kick a bouncing ball past the Tiger’s talented keeper. Westminster created several scoring chances in the game’s final minutes, many because of Khang Ngo’s ‘27 expert corner kicks. While the Martlets controlled most of the game in Suffield’s end, the defense held strong when they needed to, led by strong play from Auggie Jiranek ‘27 and excellent goaltending from Ethan Hernandez ‘27. Westminster will get back to work–with a focus on spacing and more accurate shooting–to prepare for Saturday’s match-up against perennial crosstown rival Avon Old Farms.
