Martlets Defeat Gunn

The Martlets were back on the road for the third time in a row as they drove west to take on Frederick Gunn School. To quote the early 2000s soccer movie, Green Street Hooligans, “welcome to matchday madness”. Westminster would get the madness going quick as they jumped on the board just five minutes into the match. Owen O’Farrell ‘24 would knock home a driven cross from Abraham Monsee ‘25. Both teams then settled in to play a very direct and physical game which produced lots of stoppages of play from the referee. Gunn was able to break through with a goal 25 minutes into the first half, catching Westminster’s keeper off his line. With the score 1-1 at half and another few Martlets down some players needed to play out of position or simply step into a role tonight they were not expecting. Both Luka Misko ‘27 and Connor Gray ‘26 saw a lot of time in a few different roles. The makeshift back line of Leo DiStefano ‘24, Drew Knight ‘24, Finn Williams ‘26 and Nathan Lee ‘24 were able to hold their ground. The midfield unit of Henry Warner ‘25, Abraham Monsee ‘25, Finn Hocking ‘26, Arshann Shah ‘26 and Galima Sonnah ‘26 had a bit of a sleepy first half but really put things together in the second half especially in the final 25 minutes. Westminster would break the tie with about 20 minutes to go when Misko took a smart low driven bad angle shot to produce a rebound that Shah would nail home. The Martlets would have numerous chances late to extend the lead, especially Warner with a couple crossbars and posts. He would be left asking himself if that net was regulation size. Dennis Quiwon ‘26 was busy early and had one slip up off his line but finished the day with 5 saves. The game ball for his hustle and game winning assist would go to Misko. The team wrench would be awarded to Monsee for his strong play in the midfield. Down some bodies the team looks to get healthier this week.
