Martlets Shutout DA

Westminster Girls’ Varsity Soccer traveled up 91 again this Wednesday afternoon to Deerfield Academy for their second game of the season. The Martlets battled hard against a solid Deerfield squad throughout the 90 minutes and were able to come away with a 2-0 win off of two penalty kick opportunities. Fifteen minutes into the match, Jillian Gregorski ‘24 was fouled in the box and rewarded a PK in her attempt to create a scoring opportunity. With poise and focus, Gregorski placed the ball in the back of the net. The remainder of the first half was a bit of a back-and-forth between the two teams until the whistle blew for halftime. Westminster entered the next 40 minutes with an increased focus on their shape and finding the open space on the field to play into. Despite multiple promising scoring chances, the Martlets were unable to finish. At the 67th minute mark, Catherine Graves ‘24 was fouled in the Deerfield box in the midst of her gritty attack towards the net and was awarded the second PK of the day. Graves’ penalty kick narrowly missed the lower right corner, striking the post instead, where Mia Fluckiger ‘26 was composed to collect the rebound and swiftly place the ball into the back of the net with a one-touch finish. The score remained 2-0 until the end of the match. The Martlets walked away with another win, but also with some areas of focus for the week ahead in practice. Westminster looks forward to their practices on Thursday and Friday this week to prepare for their game at Nobles this upcoming weekend. The game will be played this Saturday, September 23rd, at 3 PM.
