Martlets Win Dual Meet

It was a quintessential fall day at Suffield Academy, where Westminster, Berkshire, and Suffield assembled for the team’s last tri-meet of the season. The Suffield Academy course takes the runners around several athletic fields before rising steeply up “Bell Hill” and plummeting down the same course––all within the first mile. The runners then enter a large expanse of land behind Suffield’s main campus, winding through trails, around grassy fields, and along the perimeter of a solar field. The course finishes on a flat, short stretch along the lower soccer fields. Madison Khuu ‘24 was an early leader for the Martlets, jetting off the line and settling into fourth place overall alongside a Suffield runner heading into the second mile. Emma Mason ‘23, Saskia Mattiko ‘23, and Simone Routledge ‘23 formed a tight pack early on; Chiamaka Kanu ‘23 and Catie McGuigan ‘23 were close behind them, around a few critical Suffield runners. Coming out of the woods and into the finish, Mattiko blazed the way in fourth place overall, behind two Berkshire runners and one Suffield runner. Mason was close behind her, and Khuu finished shortly after her––the girls managed to close the distance between them and the Suffield runners in the woods. Despite rolling her ankle in the first mile, McGuigan managed to finish the entire course and clinch a first-place finish for the Martlets. Routledge also held off a critical Suffield runner in the last 100m of the course, securing the Martlet victory. The team will be home next weekend for their final home race of the season.
