Martlets Fall to AOF

Westminster traveled across the valley to face off against Avon Old Farms on a windy and warm fall afternoon. The Martlets opened the game with their best half of soccer of the season, passing well and playing tough and consistent defense after the Winged Beavers scored a goal in the game’s early minutes. Jack Pickett ‘26 was especially solid in goal, making several smart and aggressive plays to disrupt Avon’s scoring chances. Midway through the half, speedy striker Jack Doherty ‘26 evened the score at 1-1 where it remained at halftime. With the wind at their backs in the second half, the Martlets kept the ball in Avon’s zone for most of the half, but were unable to capitalize on scoring chances (several created by Aidan O’Callaghan ‘26 long passes and strong corner kicks). The Winged Bears, on the other hand, seemed to find the back of the net every time they had it in Westminster’s end, scoring four more times. Jack Doherty ‘26 scored a second goal late in the half to bring the score to 5-2 before the final whistle. With two games on the schedule before the long weekend break, the Martlets will get back to work on Monday, focusing on tightening up their defense, controlling the ball, and working to get shots on net.
