Martlets Win on the Road

Westminster traveled north on a beautiful fall afternoon to take on the Hoggers of NMH. A goal of the day for the Martlets was to have a strong start to the game, and they did just that by putting early pressure on the NMH backline and knocking in a goal just minutes into the contest. Dylan Bloom ’23 took a quick restart in the midfield and sent a ball into the circle that McKenzie Bloom’23 got a stick on and redirect to net. The talented NMH goalie was able to make the save, but Liv Fernandez ’23 was waiting patiently on the far post to tap in the rebound. Just minutes later, NMH took advantage of a defensive lapse and scored on a penalty corner to tie the game. After more back and forth play that saw several Westminster chances, the Martlets scored on another similar goal when the NMH goalie made two great saves on McKenzie Bloom before Fernandez found herself on the goal line again to tap in another rebound. Another goal of the day for the Martlets was to play more patient and disciplined individual defense all over the field and Westminster made noticeable improvements committing less fouls and forcing more turnovers that turned into offensive chances. Hadley Crowther ’25 put in a rebound on a Westminster penalty corner in the second quarter and then McKenzie Bloom put in a goal off an assist from Allysen Whitehead ’25 in the early minutes of the third quarter to bring the score to 4-1.  NMH was relentless however, and put a lot of pressure on Westminster in the fourth quarter, eventually finding the back of the cage to bring the score to 4-2. The Martlets held it together and battled through the final minutes that saw a lot of back and forth action in the midfield. Cassie Goundrey ’24 made some big stops late in the game to secure the win for the Martlets. Westminster will be back to work on Monday to prepare for a big three game week.
