Martlets Fall on the Road

The Martlets journeyed north on Route 202 to face off against the Granby Bears in their season opener. Unphased by hot temperatures, a dusty field, and skilled opponents, Westminster played hard for all eighty minutes, but ultimately fell to Granby 2-1. Granby dominated the beginning of the game and goaltender Danny Maher ‘26 made six athletic saves to keep the Martlets tied at nil at the half. Westminster started the second half energized and focused, eventually putting together a string of crisp passes that set up striker Mark Yang ‘26 to find the back of the net for the game’s first goal. Within minutes the Bears tied the game and after lots of competitive back-and-forth play Granby scored a second time with just under ten minutes to go. Determined to even the score, the Martlets created several scoring chances and keeper Jack Pickett ‘26 kept his team in the game, making six saves of his own in the second half. While the Martlets fell just short of tying the Bears, they represented their school with grit and grace, impressing their coaches and showing great promise in their first game together.
