Martlets Drop Tight Game to Bears

The Seconds made the long trip to Sheffield, Mass., to battle a Bears team boasting a strong record and some impressive wins against solid league opponents. The game proved to be a pitched battle between two hard-working teams, both led by very capable goaltenders. The Martlets had the slight edge in shots – 23 to 22 – but the Bears came away with the victory when they scored the only goal of the game midway through the second period on a delayed penalty call. The Martlets hesitated for just a half second when the ref's arm went up, and the Bears took full advantage firing a shot at the Westminster cage and banging in the rebound. Keeper Jack Schroeder '22 played an exceptionally strong game overall, but was particularly stellar in the first period when a slow Westminster start had the ice tilting against him. The Bears came out charging, and Schroeder had to make several spectacular saves to keep the game knotted at 0-0 after the opening period. A succession of Bear penalties towards the end of the first gave the Martlets some much-needed momentum, which carried over into the second period. For the remaining two periods, the Martlets did a better job of matching Berkshire's intensity and settled into a much more productive rhythm. This good play led to several great chances, but the Bears' keeper – who played an equally impressive game and fully earned his shutout – made save after save. It was much the same in the third, as the Martlets continued to press and Berkshire countering. Unfortunately, the Martlets took a series of penalties – most resulting from aggressive forechecking and neutral ice play – towards the end of the third and while the team was able to kill those off fairly efficiently (with Schroeder to clean up any miscues) they ate up valuable time on the clock. A final penalty with about a minute to play on the clock left Westminster playing 5-on-5 with Schroeder on the bench, and while the play was all in the Berkshire end their keeper kept the Black and Gold off the board. And so, again, the Martlets have a frustrating afternoon: some long periods of good play, a strong defensive effort against a good team, but struggled to find the back of the net. The coaches were pleased with the team's play, particularly in righting the ship after a shaky opening period. All of the guys contributed this afternoon, so it'll go in the books as a good team effort. The lads will enjoy their weekend and get back on the ice Monday to prepare for a rematch on the road against perennial rival, Avon Old Farms (the Martlets lost to the Winged Beavers 0-3 a month ago in a tight, entertaining hockey game). The Martlets will be ready.
