Martlets Lose In Season Finale

A great season came to an end with a Martlet loss against rival Avon Old Farms. Avon got out to a fast start against a still-depleted Westminster roster and penalty trouble precluded the boys from being able to come back despite a spirited effort. Down, at one point, 6-1 in the first half, Westminster fought back to a 6-3 halftime deficit with goals from Hunter Johnson '21, Nate Swift '19 and Johnny Van Leuven '22. A less-than 100 percent Alex Tonioni '22 had another strong game at the faceoff X, keeping the team always on the verge of mounting a comeback that was ultimately thwarted in the second half by a series of penalties. Swift and Tonioni ended up with well-deserved game balls due to their incredible toughness, dedication and leadership not only in this game, but also throughout the season. Captains Tarek Mourad '19 and Swift said it all when they addressed the team in a teary speech to end the season: "We built a team this year." As the coach, I could not be prouder of how the boys handled the ups and downs of the long spring season.
