Williston Tops Martlet in Home Opener

The Martlets hosted a strong Williston squad for the first home game of the season on Hovey Field. Westminster got on the board first with a goal from Casey Winslow '21, but Williston quickly answered with three goals of its own thanks to strong draw controls by its midfield and efficient clears from its goalie. These clears resulted in fast breaks down the middle that the Westminster defense could not easily track which led to the home team trailing at halftime by four goals. The Martlets began to string things together end-to-end, with great saves by goalie Ellie Bailey '21 and strong defensive contributions from captain Georgia Swank '19, captain Blake Cote '19 and defender Jenny Guider '20. Westminster began to chip away at Williston's lead late in the second half thanks to notable play by Betsy Winslow '21 and captain Susie Renehan '19, but time expired before the comeback could be complete. The Martlets hit the road again on Saturday to play Kent for another away contest.
