Martlets Fall to GFA

The boys qualified for the New England Class B Tournament for the second year in a row, and although went up against a talented, deep Green Farms team, there were plenty of highlights today down in Westport, CT. Playing against the other top two players, co-captains Will Whiting ‘24 and David Suit ‘24 continued to show their season improvement in doubles, hanging in there until the final stretch when their opponents couldn’t miss. The #3 team of Hugh Olson ‘25 and Finn Hocking ‘26 got off to a slow start, and credit to their opponents for capitalizing. The spark nearly came with Logan Sun ‘24 and Liam Hibbard ‘27 at the #2 position. After being down 3-0 to start the match, the boys came roaring back and even served for the set at 7-5. Despite not converting, and the match needing to stop because of the point clinch, it was some of their better doubles all year. Down 1-0 and onto singles. Green Farms showed their skill right away, getting up in three out of the four matches on court, although Suit hung in there for a majority of the opening games. Another highlight goes to Hocking at the #6 spot, who backed up his Loomis performance by taking the set against a strong opponent 6-4. Even more of a bonus was having his brother, and former tennis captain, Oliver Hocking ‘23 in the crowd along with Andrew Nelson ‘23. Love seeing the alums! Sun dropped his match quickly, followed by Whiting, and Suit hung in there as long as he could before dropping the match in straight, giving the clinch to GFA. It was high quality tennis to watch, but credit to our crew for maintaining the standard set over the past few years not just with New England qualification, but for showing their improvement from late March and battling no matter the opponent. We’ll look to close the season on a high note as we host Berkshire on Wednesday in the home finale.
