Taking Control

In a makeup from last week, the Martlets hosted the Bearcats from Hotchkiss in their third game in four days. Westminster was slow out of the gate, but the boys were able to pull themselves together to carry the play in the final two periods. Hotchkiss tried to bottleneck the ice, but the Martlets used their speed and skill to evade the trap. A goal with 30 seconds left in the first period off a blown coverage put the Bearcats ahead one after the first period. In the second, Westminster played with more life, and took control of the tempo. Unfortunately, Hotchkiss pulled ahead 2-0 halfway through the second period. The Martlets finally broke through early in the third when Iggy Belov ‘20 found Ryan Doolin ‘18 streaking toward the net. Doolin redirected the puck over the shoulder of the tender to cut the Bearcat lead to one. With just under 10 minutes to play, Patrick Dawson ‘18 picked off an errant pass just inside the Bearcat blueline and snapped a beauty past the Hotchkiss tender to tie the game at two. Jordie McKenna ‘19 also put one past the goalie after a ferocious shift in the Bearcat zone. The score was 3-2 Westminster. Dawson scored again on an empty net to seal the game and cap a great comeback. Shots ended up at 51-24 in Westminster’s favor and Ian Shane ’20 played well, making big saves late to keep his team in the game. Loomis is up next.
