Martlets Roll over K-O

The girls played some of their best soccer of the year today, proving too much for a solid Kingswood side to handle. The game started off with pretty even play, as both teams showed the potential to be dangerous. Gradually, however, the Martlets established a territorial advantage, and by midway through the first half the ball was consistently in the Wyverns’ defensive end. The tie would be broken late in the first half when a ball was fed into the box, partially cleared, fed in again, partially cleared again, and finally one-timed home by co-captain Alexa Dwyer ‘22. With only a tenuous one goal lead going into the second half, the girls were determined to maintain their momentum after the intermission. It took ten minutes for the relentless pressure to bear fruit. Ava Beckford ‘23 received the ball about 35 yards out, dribbled into the box, and got a shot off that was saved, only to then be buried by Riley Leighton Vincent ’23. Beckford got a goal of her own eight minutes later from outside of the box with a strong bending shot that hit the side netting. Ruthie Haims ‘23 scored in similar fashion just three minutes later. Eliza Cabot ‘24 scored the fifth goal from a Beckford feed in the 60th minute, and Dwyer finished off the scoring with her second goal with just six minutes to play. Additional props go to Westie Strawbridge ‘24 for her ball-winning and distribution in midfield, and to Caroline Cochener ‘22 for her cool play and organization at center back.
