Fifth Formers Recognized in WALKS Constitutional Essay Contest

Jack Stevenson ’18 and Teagan Stedman’18 were named the two finalists from Westminster School in the annual WALKS Foundation Constitutional Essay Contest. Jack went on to place first runner-up overall.

The WALKS Foundation conducts the competition to encourage study of the American Constitution through research papers. The competitive and scholarly interschool essay contest is held annually to promote research on the Constitution as it relates to current issues. Students’ papers are submitted without names and school affiliations, and are read, critiqued and judged by an independent attorney or judge. The competition culminates with an awards dinner.

This year’s essays related to the Electoral College including the questions: Has the Electoral College outlived its usefulness? How would our most recent election be affected without the use of the Electoral College process? Specific presidential elections were required in the answers. The papers were limited to 3,500 words and had to include proper citations and a bibliography. They were due April 1.

The WALKS Foundation is named after its member schools: Westminster School, Avon Old Farms School, Loomis Chaffee School, Kingswood Oxford School and Suffield. Its primary mission is to provide scholarships at its five member schools for motivated, talented youths from Greater Hartford with demonstrated financial need whose abilities, commitment and energies promise community leadership in the future. It celebrated its 60th anniversary during the 2016-2017 academic year.
