Golf-First Girls'
April 29: Golf-First Girls’ 1.5 vs Williston Northampton School 3.5
The Martlets fought hard on a beautiful spring day and fell to a solid Williston squad 3.5-1.5 at the Southhampton Country Club. Similar to last week's tight matchup with Loomis, three of five matches were again determined on the final hole of the tournament, an indication of the high compete level from the first ball strike. Williston captured the medalist honors with a 44, and both Susie Mahoney '20 and Annie Hick's ’17 carded 48 for the low Westminster scores. For Hicks, the score was a personal best even with a double par (9) on the final hole. Other notable performances included Abby LeBlanc ’17 who struck the ball solidly all afternoon, as did the entire team, especially with their respective tee shots. Eve Cathcart '20 and Ishika Nathan '19 played consistently throughout, with Cathcart earning a point for the team and Nathan carding an impressive 52 in exhibition play. Nathan's tee shot on the #2 par three was a thing of beauty, bending into the green, landing pin high and rolling 10 feet past the cup.

April 26: Golf-Second Boys’ 230
vs Avon Old Farms School 222
vs Loomis Chaffee 218
Second Boys’ Golf hosted Loomis and Avon Old Farms at Hop Meadow Country Club on a damp and cloudy day. Westminster wasn't sharp this afternoon and both opponents took advantage. Loomis shot a 218 total, to Avon's 222 and Westminster's 230. A trifecta of players (the Martlets’ Ian Broadbent '18, Avon's Connor Benton, and the Pelican's Brian Groom) earned medalist honors with a (+3) 39. Other Westminster scores included Alex Biedron ’18 (45), Carson Roth ’19 (50), Darion Benchich '20 (47), Brendan Jacobs '17 (49) and Jagger LeClair '18 (50).

Lacrosse-First Girls'
April 26: Lacrosse-First Girls’ 11 vs Taft School 12 (OT)
The game April 26 was a hard fought battle, which unfortunately did not end in a result that the Martlets were hoping for. After going down by six goals quickly in the half, the Martlets knew they had a lot of ground to cover. One by one, things started to come together, and the team started to chip away, finally tying the game at 7-7 going into the half. Winning the draw and gaining possession was going to be crucial going into the second half. The Martlets came out quickly at the start of the second half, and went on to win many draws consecutively. Both teams went back and forth scoring goals, always keeping it within a one-goal differential. With minutes to go, the Martlets had a few opportunities to take the lead, but were unable to capitalize, which sent the game into overtime. Unfortunately, Taft was able to gain possession off the first draw, and went on to score the game winning goal, a minute and a half into the first overtime. Many small victories were had, though, with disciplined team defense being played the entire game, huge saves made by goalie Leah Klassen '17 and an offensive unit that refused to give up. Goal scorers included Kylie Murphy '17, Lily Farriss '19, Fraser Allen '17, Maddy Paro '17, Kendall Brown (2) '17, Emma Lange '18, Blake Cote '19, Emma Alpaugh (2) '18 and Georgia Swank ’19.

April 29: Lacrosse-First Girls’ 10 vs Deerfield Academy 11 (OT)
It was a beautiful night for the Martlets to take on rival Deerfield Academy under the lights on their home turf. The team came out flying, and quickly went up by six quick, unanswered goals. The team won many draws, allowing for many offensive possessions and scoring opportunities. It wasn't until well into the half that Deerfield was able to get on the board. Thanks to senior goalkeeper Leah Klassen ‘17, who made many incredible saves, the Martlets were able to carry the lead at 7-2 into the second half. The team knew it had a lot of time left ahead of it to hang onto the lead, and scored early in the half to make it an 8-2 game. However, DA wasn't giving up, and score six unanswered goals. The Martlets struggled to gain possession off the draw, while DA capitalized on each possession. While never trailing, the team struggled to gain momentum. With a score of 10-10 at the end of the second half, the teams would head into a three minute, golden goal overtime. Westminster gained possession of the ball early in the overtime, but was unable to find the back of the net. Deerfield was able to find the ball in transition, and scored off a free position shot to end the game. The loss came at no lack of effort, and was a hard fought battle the entire time. The Martlets are looking forward to learning from this tough loss. Once again, senior Klassen had a stellar performance in net.

April 29: Lacrosse-First Boys’ 9 vs Millbrook School 8

Lacrosse-Second Girls'
April 26: Lacrosse-Second Girls’ 11 vs Taft School 9
Second Girls' Lacrosse faced off against the Taft Rhinos and played a stellar second half for the come-from-behind win. The Martlets started slowly allowing the Rhinos to dictate the play for the entire first half. Tallies by Maddie Dwyer '18, Dora Mitchel '17 and Katy Maxon '18 and great saves by goalie Nadia Lee '18 kept the Martlets alive in the first half, despite being down by four to the Rhinos. Halftime gave the Martlets all the time they needed to refocus and recharge. The Martlet offense exploded in the second half as the team scored eight unanswered goals to take the lead. The team contested the Rhinos' every possession and caused many timely turnovers. Defensive midfielder Natalie Fay '19 twice picked up a ground ball and drove the entire field to score. McKenna Burelle '17 and Dwyer won most of the draws, which really set the tone in the midfield and the defensive unit of Layla Ennis '19, Jane Ogden '19, Bennie Lopez '17 and Ondine Finley '19 broke up many of the Rhinos' offensive plays. A team effort was key for the Martlets.

April 29: Lacrosse-Second Girls’ 6 vs Deerfield Academy 12
Second Girls’ Lacrosse was slow to start its game against Deerfield and found itself in a deep hole by halftime, unable to keep up with Deerfield's quick transitions in the midfield and dynamic play around the goal. The second half was much more even as the Martlet offense got in gear and started driving to the net. The Martlet defense led by goalie Nadia Lee '18, who had 10 saves on the day, kept the game close for much of the second half. Goals were scored by McKenna Burelle '17 (3), Dora Mitchel '17 (2) and Brinley Cuddeback '17, with assists by Katy Maxon '18 and McKenzie Roller '20. The Martlets plan to regroup next week.

Lacrosse-Second Boys'
April 26: Lacrosse-Second Boys’ 2 vs Avon Old Farms School 8
Hoping to redeem themselves for their earlier loss, the Martlets played a strong first half against Avon on April 26. Avon is steady and disciplined, and they work hard for ground balls. Despite a 2-1 lead at halftime, it was Avon who took control of the momentum in the second half. Penalties and a few early breaks enabled the Winged Beavers to seize momentum. They capitalized when it counted and never looked back. Kyle Forsyth ‘17 was excellent in net. Inconsistent effort between the restraining lines, a lack of movement on offense, and losing the ground ball battle were the difference.

Lacrosse-Third Girls'
April 26: Lacrosse-Third Girls’ 5 vs Hotchkiss School 9
With few Martlets to play, Hotchkiss agreed to play down in a 10 v 10 set-up. Excited to have Sarah Levine '19 and Kate Lovas '18 back on the field, the team went out with energy. Hotchkiss scored the first goal but the Martlets came right back to score. The score kept bouncing back and forth with Hotchkiss getting one goal and the Martlets responding by tying it back up. Abby Hoglund '18 scored two goals in the first half and Lovas scored one. Going into the second half, the score was 4-3, Hotchkiss. Starting the second half the team continued to work together to pass up the field well. When there was a turnover and the ball was headed back to their defensive end, the midfield, Abby Moss '20 and Abby Davis '20, worked hard to mark up the Hotchkiss player. In the team's defensive end, Kyani Jemmotte '20 played goalie for the first time. Jemmotte proved herself as a solid goalie with some great saves. Also in the defensive end, Mia Stevens '18 and Olivia Falk '19 used their intuition and eye to slide when their team needed them to pick up Hotchkiss players and put pressure on. The defense end as a whole continued to work on communication throughout the game. Towards the middle of the second half, Lovas scored two more goals when she saw clear openings to take the shots. In the end, Hotchkiss pulled away to score five more goals, making the final score 9-5. The Martlets worked hard and played well together.

April 29: Lacrosse-Third Girls’ 5 vs Loomis Chaffee 11
It was one of the hottest days of the season when the Martlets traveled over to Loomis to play their game. The team lost to Loomis in its first scrimmage and knew it would be difficult. However, the Martlets took to the field confidently knowing their skills had improved a lot. On defense, Mia Steven's '18 worked hard to cover players. Shaunna Walsh '20 moved to pick up players quickly, and Olivia Falk '19 and Sarah Levine '19 worked hard to get the ball out of the defensive end by applying pressure and racing towards ground balls. Without many substitutes Abby Davis '20 worked hard playing in the midfield for the entire game. After the first half, the score was 2-5 with Loomis in the lead. Although tired, Westminster took a short break during half time and went back out onto the field determined to try hard. They worked together well and had a couple breakaways scoring three more goals. Unfortunately, Loomis pulled ahead scoring six goals in the second half making the final score of the game 11-5 Loomis. The Martlets goal scorers included Sofia Raymond '19 scoring the first goal off of a penalty shot and Kate Lovas '18 with four goals. Kyani Jemmotte '20 had 17 saves in her second game ever in goal. The team walked away knowing it worked hard but still has things to work on.

Lacrosse-Third Boys'
April 26: Lacrosse-Third Boys’ 11 vs Avon Old Farms School 8
Westminster went on the road to play a hungry and determined Avon squad. The Martlets jumped out to a commanding lead of 7-1 but the Winged Beavers would battle back to make it a 9-7 game entering the fourth quarter. Luckily for the visitors, they were able to connect on some fast breaks and good opportunities in the last 10 minutes to get the win 11-8. The streak stays alive at 4-0, as Westminster looks to host Eaglebrook this weekend. The game ball would go to Liam Seeley '20 who had two big goals in transition during the day.

April 29: Lacrosse-Third Boys’ 12 vs Eaglebrook School 1
Third Boys' Lacrosse looked to keep the undefeated streak alive as the team hosted the Eaglebrook School JV team on a hot sunny day. The Martlets scored just eight seconds into the game and would never look back. The first half would see some great ball movement both on and off the ball. The second half would see lots of players getting some great field time. In any game where you can hold the other team to zero goals with just two minutes left in the game is a great team defensive effort. The game ball went to all the close defenders: Khalil Walker '19, Galym Sarkytbayev '19, Boyan Alipiev '19, Mac Dye '20, Justin Parsons '20, Will Scott '20 and goalie Eddie Lie-A-Cheong '19 with 12 solid saves.

Softball-First Girls'

In the first inning, nine batters came to the plate and delivered multiple hits to give the Black and Gold a quick 6-0 lead. For the day, Monroe was 3-3 and had five runs batted in. Emily Samar' 18 also had a big day at the plate, with three hits and four RBIs. Gabby Brown '17, Lucy Noel '18, Katie Neilsen '18 and Gabby Nemarich '20 had two hits apiece, and Ashlee White '18 drove in three runs. Westminster players were flawless in the field, and Samar caught a strong game.

Ally Marenco '18 allowed just three Northfield Mount Herman base hits to lead Westminster to a seventh consecutive win. Mackenzie Griffith '17, Brenna Monroe '17, Lauren Ferraiuolo '17, Lucy Noel '18, Emily Samar '18 and Ashlee White '18 had two hits apiece for the Black and Gold. Monroe, Samar and White each had three runs batted in. The Martlets jumped out to a decisive lead in the first inning and never looked back. Defensively, Megan Cournoyer '19 caught a fine game. White made a number of sharp plays at shortstop, and Ferraiuolo had three nice put outs at third base. Katie Neilsen '18 was strong at first base throughout the afternoon. NMH was led by Julia McClellan, who singled and scored in the second inning and also was effective behind the plate.

Tennis-First Girls'
April 26: Tennis-First Girls’ 4 vs Taft School 5
The Martlets were on the cusp of victory in a tight match against Taft but ultimately were unable to hang on for the win and lost 5-4. With the rain abating and a great effort made by the Taft grounds crew, the Rhinos and Martlets were able to play a full match on the outside courts. It was clear from the first points that this was going to be a grudge match. All three doubles contests were back and forth with Westminster ultimately winning two of the three. Mary Kille '18 and Lily von Stade '17 were down to start but took control and eventually won their set 8-5. Nat Wilson '18 and Clara Ekholm '20 got out to a nice 4-1 lead but let Taft back into the match. The Black and Gold were ultimately able to pull it back together and win 8-5. Maggie Chaves '19 and Alex Wolf '19 had a back and forth duel at #3 doubles, and despite being up at different points in the match fell 7-9. Ellie Suit '20 started off the singles play at #6. She struggled in the first half of the match and fell behind 4-1. She fought back, however, and ultimately found herself up 9-8. Her Rhino opponent did not quit, and Suit ultimately lost 9-11. Von Stade claimed her second victory of the day when, after going up 5-0 on her opponent, the Taft player retired due to injury. Kille secured the other singles victory at #3, winning in commanding fashion without dropping a game. The Martlets only needed one more match to win, and it looked like it could come at either #4 with Wilson or #5 with Chaves. Wilson was pitted against a player very much like herself, and they exchanged games throughout the pro-set. Ultimately Wilson was up 9-8 and had two match points, which would have earned the team victory as well. Unfortunately, Taft did not quit and Wilson fell 9-11. The contest was left to Chaves who found herself playing against a virtual backboard. In her second close match of the day, Chaves did all she could to put pressure on her opponent. In the end, it wasn't quite enough and she lost 8-10. It was a great, competitive match. Too bad Westminster doesn't get another chance at them.

April 29: Tennis-First Girls’ 9 vs Suffield Academy 0
On a summer-like day, the Martlets hosted Suffield and came away with a resounding 9-0 win. Things started well with the doubles, where at #1 Nat Wilson '18 and Clara Ekholm '20 got out to a strong start and never looked back, winning 8-1. Ellie Suit '20 and Olivia Zhang '20 also looked good in their debut in doubles at #3. Playing with increasing confidence, they defeated the tigers 8-2. Leta Giordano '17 and Liz Casey '18 were challenged at #2 doubles, falling behind at one point, but battled back to win 8-6. In singles, the Martlets were particularly dominant, at #1 (Lily von Stade '17), #2 (Mary Kille '18) and #5 (Ekholm). Playing the best of three sets each, these girls combined to lose only three games. Alex Wolf '19 at #4 and Giordano at #6 also maintained control of their matches winning 6-2, 6-3. Maggie Chaves '19 was tested at #3 and needed a tiebreaker to win the first set but then pulled away in the second to win 6-2.

The Martlets got their first win of the season against a short-handed squad from Canterbury. It was a sunny, warm day, perfect for tennis. Cam Jury ’19 and Scott Wilson ’19 won #1 doubles 8-5. Mike Fiorini ’18 and Zach Tarazi ’18 battle from 5-6 down to force a tiebreaker at 8-8 and won 7-5 to secure a sweep for the doubles. The two teams of Aidan Wood '20 and Darian Purcell '19 and Nick Wee '18 and Quoc Truong '20 both won close games in a 6-4 decision. The third boys' double team of Jack Hajdukiewicz '18 and Chris Turino '20 lost a nail biter, coming down to a tiebreak and ultimately losing 6-7. On the girls side, Eda Chen '20 and Isabel von Bargen-Burke '19 both played singles. Chen lost 3-6 against a steady player and von Bargen-Burke won handily 2-6. Rounding out the first set of matches were doubles teams whose games went down to the wire: Lily Carrel '19 and Michelle Kim '20 lost by just one game, as did Ozzy Kutluel '18 and Vernita Zhai '20. The second round of competition featured a new mix of partners; again, the girls' games were close (Kutluel and Zhai, Chen and Kim as well as Carrel and von Bargen-Burke all lost either 4-6 or 3-6) and the boys doubles of Wood and Turino, Lee and Hajdukiewicz, and Wee and Purcell all won either 6-1 or 6-2.  Finally, Truong played a singles match and won 6-3. It was a great afternoon on the courts.

April 29: Tennis-Third Coed 2 vs Taft School 5
On a hazy, warm afternoon on Williams Hill, the Martlets welcomed the Taft Rhinos for their Founder’s League home opener. With temperatures in the 80’s and blustery winds, the Martlets had to battle the conditions as well as a young and talented Taft squad. The Martlets won all the doubles and one singles but came up short by a score of 5-2.

Westminster got off to a good start in doubles led by Jack Flanagan ‘17 and Justin Liu ‘18 winning at number one, 6-4. Cal LeClair ‘17 and John Hunt ‘17 overwhelmed their opponents at two doubles, by a score of 6-3, while Kai Edmonds ‘19 and Aidan Wood ‘20 completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory at three doubles. In exhibition play, the team of Alex Ellis ‘20 and Vincent Wang ‘19 lost to their opponents, 2-6.

In singles Darian Purcell ‘19 and Scott Lee ‘20 both dropped their matches 3-8 at six and five singles. LeClair and Wood also had great rallies with their opponents before dropping their sets at four and three singles 2-8. Liu played another consistent match before coming up short 4-8. In exhibition singles, Jack Hajdukiewicz ‘18 won his match 8-6.

The match of the day was played by Flanagan at one singles. He faced a younger but experienced player with an aggressive attacking style. Flanagan mixed in a variety of spins with a powerful serve to keep his opponent off balance. Flanagan won by playing with a relaxed consistency that proved too much for the Taft player, 8-6. With the victory, Flanagan improves to a perfect 4-0 on the season.
