First Boys’ Football
On Oct. 8, First Boys’ Football faced off against St. Luke’s School and came away with a win, 38-7. Delando Clarke ‘17, Jagger LeClair ‘18, Tim Callahan ‘17 and Will Livingston ‘19 all scored touchdowns. Quarterback Jack Devlin ‘19 threw for two scores and Josiah Green ‘18 caught several deep passes from Devlin. On the defensive side of the ball, Joel Groves ‘17, Dominic Cirillo ‘17, Jack Detwiler ‘19, Tim Callahan, LeClair and Conor Brennan ‘17 all set record quarterback sacks. Will Livingston ‘19 returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown, and Alex Londal ‘17 blocked a punt that set up the second Martlet touchdown of the game. The Martlets lead the entire game. The only offensive score from St. Luke’s came late in the fourth quarter. As a whole, the Martlets played a great game.

Second Boys’ Football
The team had a game against Wilbraham & Monson Academy on Oct. 5 in which it emerged victorious, final score 16-12.

First Girls’ Soccer
The Martlets had a home match against Miss Porter’s School on Oct. 5. The team put up a great fight in the first half and that overall good team effort resulted in a 0-0 score. The second half was a bit of a different story. Porter’s came out on fire and scored four pretty quick goals. A thank you goes to Emily Samar ‘18 for her play and leadership on the field. The game went to Porter’s 4-0.

The team fought hard at its second consecutive away night game on Oct. 8 against a talented Loomis Chaffee team. Great performances by Emily Samar ‘18, Emma Alpaugh ‘18 and Katherine Eckerson ‘17 up top. The game went to Loomis, 4-0.

First Boys’ Soccer
‪Westminster would hit the road Oct. 5, going to Williston Northampton School. The Martlets would open the scoring as Jack Griffith ‘17 would slot home a low shot assisted by Will Leathers ‘17. Williston would respond with a partial breakaway and get one past a fully extended Max Powers ‘17. Fred Seo ‘17 would give the visitors the lead as he pounced on a rebound inside the six-yard box. Williston would again tie the game before Griffith would nail home a highlight goal top corner off a great long pass from Darian Purcell ‘18. The Martlets would play with a 3-2 lead for much of the last 20 minutes until the home team was awarded a penalty kick with just two minutes to go. Williston would make it count and tie it up 3-3 for the final.

The Martlets came away with another tie, 1-1, on Oct. 8 when they faced off against Kingswood-Oxford School. Westminster was traveling with a smaller squad, with seven players out of the line with injuries and illness. Many new faces in the starting line-up had to step up and play big. Riley Wood ‘19, Nikola Kostic ‘18, Will Lynch ‘20 and Alec Paro ‘19 all got their first starts of the season. Both teams pushed the pace in the first half with both goalies getting some good work. Powers again was solid in net for the visitors, finishing the day with nine solid saves, include two point-blank ones. Alex Semler ‘17, Jeffrey Guiliano ‘17, Artur Szopa ‘17 and Chanler Miller ‘18 all played hard in the middle of the field and were outstanding in the air. Westminster scored early in the second half off a well-played ball by Darian Purcell ‘19 to a streaking Alec Costanza ‘17 for his first goal of the season.

Second Boys’ Soccer
Second Boys’ Soccer traveled to Williston on Oct. 5, and jumped on its opponents early with two set pieces just minutes apart. In the ninth minute, Walker Stevens ‘19 lofted a free kick in the area. Wick Carter ’19, who laid it off to Lukas Dudzik ’19, who drove it in from the six-yard line, brought down the ball. Six minutes later, Aly Tolba ‘18 hit a free kick from deep in Martlet territory and linked up with speedy attacker Stevens who took a full speed running shot through the keeper’s legs. Williston struck back with a laser free kick of its own which played off the hands of goalie Malcolm Kleeban ‘20 and into the net. Ryan Pineault ‘20 headed in a loose ball following a Westminster corner kick in the 27th minute to put the visitors up 3-1. In the second half, the Martlets capitalized on another corner kick that pinballed to Myles Hamm ‘17 just inside the 18 on the left post. Hamm bicycled the kick over his head and into the top right corner for the final goal of the game. The defensive prowess of Zach Tarazi ‘18, Kyle Forsyth ‘17, Brett Daubert ‘20 and Henry Mitrano ‘19 kept the Williston counterattack stymied, and second-half keeper Ian Shane ‘20 was a rock in the net. ‪Final score had Westminster winning, 4-1.

At its Oct. 8 game, the team controlled the pace, with its best possession and defensive play yet. Despite peppering the Kingswood-Oxford keeper with shots, the team went into halftime scoreless. Two minutes into the second period, though, Walker Stevens ‘19 stripped a Wyvern defender and fed the ball to SK Lee ‘17. Lee took one touch into the penalty area and found the net with his right foot from 15 yards out. Westminster keeper Ian Shane ‘20 smothered every shot K-O put on frame. In the 78th minute, Wick Carter ‘19 dribbled down the left side and sent in a lovely cross to Lukas Dudzik ‘19, who headed it into the top right corner to put the game away 2-0. Ryan Pineault ‘20 played well in the midfield, with excellent support from Myles Hamm ‘17, Kyle Forsyth ‘17 and Brett Daubert ‘20 in the back. Final score, Westminster 2, Kingswood 0.

Second Girls’ Soccer
‪On Oct. 5, the girls tasted defeat for the second straight game, falling to a strong Miss Porter’s School team 3-0.Susie Mahoney ‘20 created a couple of good chances for herself, but her best shot went just wide of the net. The visitors scored a very nice goal in the 34th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, the depleted Martlet squad found it increasingly difficult to find the energy necessary to defend against the Daisies passing game. A great individual effort in the 46th minute gave Porter’s a 2-0 lead and a third and final goal was added 10 minutes later.

The team suffered its second 1-0 loss in just over a week Oct. 8 at its game with Loomis Chaffee. A long shot in the first minute took the Westminster keeper by surprise, catching her off her line. The resulting goal ended up being the lone tally. Special credit goes to Maddie Dwyer ‘18 and Lizzy McCoy ‘20, who turned back a number of attacks in central defense, to Natalie Rubin ‘19 and Ridgely Green ‘20, who were tireless in midfield, and to Susie Mahoney ‘20 who was frequently dangerous in attack.

Third Boys’ Soccer
‪At its Oct. 5 game, the Martlets fell 6-1 to a tough Taft team. The first half was close with both teams playing solid defense. Once again, it was Peter Hall ‘18 shutting down the Rhinos. Cam Jury ‘19 was outstanding in net. Eddie Lie-A-Cheong ‘19 led several transition runs for Westminster. Will Gilson ‘20 and Willie Noble ‘20 had decent looks at the Rhino goal. Finally, Taft snuck one in for a 1-0 lead at the break. The second half began with Khalil Walker ‘19 placing a clear shot right over the goal. Walker and Noble continued to pressure the Rhinos. While the Martlets were not able to convert their chances, the Rhinos snuck a few goals in and built a 5-0 lead. Finally, Quinn Armstrong ‘20 played a high ball to Noble, and Noble put it past the Rhino keeper. Jury held strong in the net and the Martlets hit the crossbar twice in the last five minutes.

Cameron Jury ‘19 delivered a unanimous verdict as the Martlets toped Loomis Chaffee 1-0 on Oct. 8 against. The defense, lead by forward Peter Hall ‘18, kept the Pelicans grounded all afternoon. Carl Ekholm ‘19 and Kai Edmonds ‘19 kept the Pelican strikers away. With the score tied 0-0 at halftime, the Martlets needed a spark to get things going. Jacob Monroe ‘20 and Willie Noble ‘20 supplied the necessary ignition. Five minutes into the second stanza, Monroe played a beautiful ball to the right corner. Noble beat one Pelican and drilled a perfect ball in the upper left corner. Although the Martlets were leading, they kept the pressure on the Pelicans for the rest of the game. Darion Benchich ‘20, Will Gilson ‘20 and Riley Larsen ‘18 pounded away at the keeper. In the end, the Martlet pressure and defense, lead by Hall and Curtis Brockelman ‘19, were all that Westminster needed to preserve the win.

‪At its home game Oct. 5, the team lost 7-1 to Kingswood-Oxford School.

At its away game Oct. 8, the team lost 3-2 to Loomis Chaffee.

First Girls’ Field Hockey
‪Westminster played well to score twice in the first six minutes of the Oct. 5 game against Miss Porter’s School, through Lilly Holmes ‘18 and Kendall Brown ‘17. Westminster scored again before half time with a nice corner from Maddy Paro ‘17. In the second half, Holmes scored again, with Shannon Keefe ‘19 also netting the ball. It was a good win, with the final score 5-0.

Westminster came out strong Oct. 8 against Loomis Chaffee, putting two goals in early doors. Both goals were from well-worked corners, and Loomis was quickly playing catch up. Westminster worked the ball around with great speed: a new aspect of the team’s game that is rapidly improving competitiveness. Westminster scored again to make it 3-0 just at the opening of the second half, before Loomis scored with 15 minutes to go to set it at 3-1. Westminster scored from another nice corner to make the final score 4-1. This was a great win. Goal scorers included: two for Emma Lange ‘18 and one each for Madie Bologa ‘17 and Jill Parsons ‘19.

Second Girls’ Field Hockey
‪On Oct. 5, the Martlets came away with a 3-0 win against Miss Porter’s School. Sophia Gasser ‘18 played great as left wing, staying in her position, and because of this was able to score a great goal assisted by Eliza Polukhin ‘19. The second half began and an increase in communication allowed the team to land two more goals in the net. Polukhin scored both of the goals. The team goalies, Kyani Jemmotte ‘20 and Maddie Vanech ‘19, had multiple saves throughout the game and were critical in solidifying the shut out.

The team was ready to play Oct. 8, despite the grey weather and scattered raindrops coming down. When the game started, Loomis dominated the play but the Martlet defense held strong and prevented Loomis from making a goal. The Martlets saw their opponent’s momentum and reflected it back to them. The team stepped up its game and intensity. There was a lot of back and forth play between Loomis and Westminster in the first half, and the teams came off the field still tied 0-0. Within the first few minutes of the second half, Eliza Polukhin ‘19 scored a goal assisted by Sophia Gasser ‘18. The crowd gasped as Sophia Raymond ‘19 almost had a goal after deflecting the ball towards the net, the it missed by a fraction of an inch. The team tried again and Rebecca Sargent ‘20 almost scored but the keeper blocked it, and as the ball bounced off the keeper’s pads, Polukhin took advantage of the moment and tapped it into the next. Loomis stepped up its intensity and took control of the ball bringing it down into the Martlets defensive end. Within the last few minutes, the team put the ball on net and scored a goal. While the end of the game was tense, the Martlets continued working together to defend their end and managed to win 2-1.

First Boys’ Cross Country
Westminster vs WNH 34-23; Westminster vs K-O 15-47
The Martlets traveled on Oct. 8 for their annual contest with the Williston Wildcats and the Kingswood-Oxford Wyverns, two teams that tell the team a lot about its season. Last year, Westminster edged Kingswood by one point and lost badly to Williston, one of the top teams in the league for the past few seasons. This year, the Martlets were excited to be on the fast Williston course; the team regularly runs its best times of the season there. The field came flying out of the start, with the leaders running a sub-five minute pace for the first mile and the top 12 all under 6:15. Emmett de Kanter ‘19 tried to hang with the RMI champion, Nick Hill from Williston, but Hill was on a mission to break 16 minutes, which he did. That barrier is not broken often, especially at the midpoint of the season. De Kanter was not far behind, running a lifetime personal record of 16:20 (5:16 pace). The top 10 Martlets broke 20 minutes, with notable runs by Elliott Kennard ‘19, who broke 18 minutes for the first time, Jordan Gabbidon ‘17 at 18:01, Teagan Stedman ‘18 and Daniel Pinckney’s lifetime bests under 18:30 and it was Justin Schuster’s ‘19 first time under 19 minutes. John Kuzminskas ‘18 rounded out the top seven with his first run under 20 minutes. The team took the top five spots against K-O and closed the gap between Westminster and RMI champion Williston in that defeat.

Second Boys’ Cross Country
The thinclads from Westminster were eager to race at Williston on Oct. 8, the fastest course in the league, against solid competition from the deep Williston and perennially competitive Kingswood-Oxford squads. All but two boys set their season best times on the course this day, with veteran Matt Swenson ‘17 deserving a special shout-out for breaking his lifetime personal record by going sub-eight minute miles for the first time in his four years on the team. His commitment and improvement has been inspiring. The scoring group of Matt Cosentino ‘18, Alex Ellis ‘20 and John Rao ‘17 led by breaking 20 minutes, and they were joined by surging Andrew Doucette ‘18 and Connor Seeley ‘18 to finish in front of all the K-O JV runners. Newcomers Ryan Szykowny ‘18, Chris Whipple ‘18, Wes Oltsch ‘20 and Vincent Wang ‘20 dropped significant time off their season (and therefore lifetime) bests. The team fell to a deep Williston squad, but it was much closer than last year and the team has another shot at them later in the season.

First Girls’ Cross Country
Westminster 41 and Williston 20; Westminster 21 and K-O 38
The Martlets traveled to Williston on Oct. 8, for their first tri-meet of the season against the Wildcats and Kingswood-Oxford. The course in Easthampton is notoriously flat, which resulted in many runners shattering their fastest times. Oumou Kanoute ‘17 lowered her personal best time by 29 seconds, finishing at an even 20:00. Not only did this make her the second fastest female Martlet in school history, but it was also good enough for first place in the race. Liz Casey ‘18 also ran at a blistering pace and finished a minute faster than her best time (21:46). Caroline Percival ‘19 continues to push herself and crossed the line at 22:23, another personal best. Abby Hovey ‘18 and Sarah Minella ‘17 rounded out the top five to push the Black and Gold past the Wyverns. Williston, however, proved too deep to beat. Martina Daniele ‘19 and Sami Dording ‘19 also shattered their personal bests, each by substantial amounts.
