Three New Head Coaches Named

Westminster Director of Athletics Tim Joncas has announced the appointments of three new head coaches for the 2016-2017 academic year, saying, “I am thrilled that Lawrence Court will be serving as head coach of First Field Hockey, Lindsay Crosby as head coach of First Girls’ Lacrosse and Ryan Curtis as head coach of First Boys’ Lacrosse.”

Lawrence Court, Head Coach First Field Hockey

Lawrence Court began playing field hockey in Scotland, winning the Scottish Schools Cup while playing at left midfield. He coached field hockey at Strathallan School, Scotland, and Eton College, England, before moving to the U.S. to teach and coach at Collegiate School in Richmond, Va., from 2012. In 2014, he moved to Hopkins School, New Haven, and coached the varsity field hockey team to its best-ever season record (13 - 3) in 2015. He was named All-Area Field Hockey Coach of the Year by the New Haven Register for the 2015 season.

“Field hockey has been in Lawrence’s life as long as he can remember,” said Tim. “Given the experience he has in the game of field hockey as a player and coach, I am very confident that he will continue to build upon the success that our field hockey program has had over the past five seasons posting a record of 72-17-1. I am excited to work with him and know that our field hockey program is in very good, capable, hands.”

In addition to coaching field hockey and living on campus, Lawrence will serve as head of the English Department.

Lindsay Crosby, Head Coach, First Girls’ Lacrosse

Before her appointment at Westminster in 2015 as associate director of admissions, and head coach of Second Girls’ Soccer and Second Girls’ Lacrosse, Lindsay was assistant varsity lacrosse coach for two years at Deerfield Academy. At the college level, she served two years as assistant women’s lacrosse coach and recruiting coordinator at Babson College, and two years as assistant women’s lacrosse coach and recruiting coordinator at Amherst College.

A graduate of Springfield College with a degree in health science and education and a minor in coaching, she was twice named the female athlete of the year, having played on the varsity soccer and varsity lacrosse teams all four years.  For varsity soccer, she was voted team captain and named First Team All-NEWMAC in 2006 and 2007, and Second Team All-NEWMAC 2007. For varsity lacrosse, she was voted team captain and First Team All-NEWMAC in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

“Lindsay's extensive background and knowledge about lacrosse bodes well for the future of our program,” said Tim. “I have enjoyed watching Lindsay coach this past year in both our soccer and lacrosse programs. She is an outstanding role model for our student-athletes, and I am confident that our program will continue on its upward trajectory under her leadership. Lindsay’s coaching background will not only help attract top student-athletes to our school, but her connections at the college level will play an integral role of moving our student athletes onto the NCAA.”

Lindsay lives in Milliken House with her family.

Ryan Curtis, Head Coach First Boys’ Lacrosse

Ryan Curtis, recently stepped down as head coach of the University of Vermont’s men’s lacrosse program for the past decade to join the Westminster faculty as head coach of First Boys’ Lacrosse, assistant coach of football, associate director of college counseling and a history teacher.

UVM closed the season May 7 having posted its most wins (9) since 2006 and the most during Ryan’s tenure. Last season, Ryan became the first-ever coach in program history to be named America East Coach of the Year. In each of the last two years, he has guided the Catamounts to a program-record four victories in conference play as the team secured its best-ever seed in the conference playoffs.

Ryan spent eight years playing Major League Lacrosse for the Boston Cannons (2001-06, 2008) in Boston and for the Washington Bayhawks (2007) in Washington, D.C. He was named a MLL All-Star five times and was named the MLL Defensive Player of the Year in 2003. He was also named the Cannons’ MVP on three occasions and was a three-time captain in Boston.

Ryan is a 2000 graduate of the University of Virginia and won a national championship with the Cavaliers in 1999. He was named a First Team NCAA All-American twice and was named the 1999 NCAA Defenseman of the Year. Ryan was also a two-time captain at UVA and was named to the 50th Anniversary All-ACC Team.

Ryan served as an assistant coach for the Dartmouth College men’s lacrosse team in 2006. He was also a member of the United States National Lacrosse Team that participated in the World Championships and won a silver medal in 2006. He was named the Regional Advisor for the America East on the NCAA Championships Committee in 2012 and is also a member of the IMLCA Legislative Committee, USILA All-America Committee, USILA Poll Committee and the NCAA Rules Committee.

“Ryan brings with him a very impressive coaching and playing resume,” said Tim. “He has done an incredible job of building the men’s lacrosse program at UVM, and I am confident that he will build on the good work that Peter Newman has done over his time here as our head coach. Ryan is just the fourth head coach in our program’s history, and I am thrilled that he will lead the program. Ryan is a coach, but above all else, he is an educator. He understands how to relate to student-athletes, how to maximize their potential, and how to get the group to understand the benefits of working as one.”

Ryan and his family will live in Squibb House.
