Westminster Student Competes in U.S.A. Math Olympiad

On April 19 and April 20, Fourth Former Albert Gao took the United States of America Math Olympiad (USAMO) in Armour Academic Center. Albert is one of only 270 students in the entire country who qualified for this exam.

Approximately 30 of the highest-scoring USAMO participants will be invited, along with about 25 younger students, all expenses paid, to the Math Olympiad Summer Program at Carnegie Mellon University. Those students participate in the International Math Olympiad in Hong Kong in July.

Albert is the first Westminster student in recent history to participate in the USAMO. Qualification for this exam began in February with the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) test. Albert and 72 other Westminster students took the AMC on Feb. 17.  Albert scored better than 99 percent of the 30,000 students who took the test that day from around the world, and he qualified for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). On March 3, he and about 5,000 other students took the AIME, a 15-question, three-hour exam. Albert was one of the top 270 students who took that test and qualified for the prestigious USAMO.

The USAMO is a six-question, two-day, nine-hour essay/proof examination. All problems can be solved without calculus. Albert will find out his results in early May.

“We all wish him the best, and look forward to seeing him participate in Hong Kong this summer,” said Tony Griffith, head of Westminster’s Mathematics Department. “Mathematics is increasingly important in our technological and scientific age. Taking enough mathematics at Westminster School is the gateway to jobs and careers of all kinds, even those that are not explicitly mathematical, scientific or technological.”

Each year, between 75 and 100 Westminster students push themselves by taking the AMC. The problems on the AMC, AIME and USAMO are meant to be more challenging than those they routinely encounter in their classes. “We hope that Albert’s success inspires even more students to take an interest in mathematics,” added Tony.
