Student Named Best Delegate at Canadian High Schools Model UN Conference

Fourth Former Nick Wee was named Best Delegate for his participation in the Canadian High Schools Model United Nations 2016 conference held March 11-13 in Vancouver, Canada. A resident of British Columbia, he was a delegate representing the United States in NATO and participated in discussions about security and exit strategy in Kosovo and reviewing the morals of modern NATO warfare tactics.

“Delegates basically had to work together and reach a resolution, while at the same time debate their respective country’s stance on the two topics, entering moderated and unmoderated caucuses to do so,” said Nick. “At the same time, we had to work on draft resolution papers, or working papers, that would contain all the clauses being debated to reach an effective and diplomatic solution to the problems. There was a maximum of one resolution allowed to pass per topic, which would have to be presented and voted on by the entire committee.”

Nick won the Best Delegate Award out of approximately 30 other delegates on his committee. “The best delegate usually stands out most to the chair and director and passes resolutions,” he explained. “I successfully presented and passed two of two resolutions that were voted on by the rest of the committee. You have to stick to your country’s foreign policy while remaining diplomatic.”

The award came with a gavel with the name of his committee and the conference engraved on it. “I was pretty ecstatic about receiving it,” he said.

Nick started Model UN last year. He won Outstanding Delegate, or second place, last May at another three-day Canada International Model United Nations Conference where he represented the Russian Federation on the International Atomic Energy Agency Committee.

At Westminster, Nick participates in Global Forum and the Model UN club, and attended the recent Yale Model UN.

“I was first attracted to Model UN as a way to explore public speaking and get better at it, and thoroughly enjoyed my first conference,” he said. “I have attended five conferences so far, all three-day hotel conferences taking place in downtown Vancouver, with Yale MUN being the one exception. Meeting new people and networking is also a big part in high school Model UN, which is overall very engaging.”
