Language Department Head Selected as Lead Teacher for Klingenstein Summer Institute

Sara Deveaux P’14, ’16, who serves as head of the Westminster Language Department and teaches French, has been named a co-lead teacher for world languages for the 2016 Klingenstein Summer Institute. The institute is part of The Klingenstein Center, an organization within Teachers College of Columbia University that aims to improve the quality of independent and international school education by developing and strengthening leadership among teachers and administrators in those schools.

Each year, the center awards 75 teachers from a competitive worldwide applicant pool fully funded fellowships to attend a two-week summer institute in Lawrenceville, N.J., for an exploration of teaching styles, educational philosophies, educational issues and personal development.Sara, who attended the institute in 1992 as a fellow, returns this year as a lead teacher with responsibilities for leading eight to 10 sessions of one to two hours each for the world languages curriculum group.  She will individually mentor members of her group and connect with other participants who may seek guidance.

“I would count my time spent as a Klingenstein Summer Fellow in 1992 as a life-changing experience and one that was instrumental in solidifying my decision to dedicate my career to education,” said Sara, who describes the art of teaching as a continuum. “I am honored to have the opportunity as a co-lead world languages teacher to help instill a love of teaching in this year’s summer fellows as I strive to do with my colleagues at Westminster.”

Since her arrival at Westminster in 1991, Sara has taught French at every level from beginner to AP French Literature, including Sixth Form independent studies. She also has served on the board of the Connecticut Chapter of the AATF (American Association of Teachers of French) and the Hartford Chapter of the Alliance Française. In the summer, she has graded AP French language exams.
