Meet New Faculty Member Danny Batten

Peter Decoteau

Teaching:
Spanish II and III Honors

Coaching: Strength & Conditioning, Track

What brought you to Westminster?
I looked into moving to the Northeast with my wife as she’s preparing to enter a graduate program. I was doing personal training and group fitness in Tennessee, but before that I was teaching in Savannah, Georgia, and I really wanted to get back into education. When I came to Westminster for my interview it didn’t feel like an interview at all – it felt natural and comfortable. It really felt like the right fit.

What is it about language that you love?
What really got me into language was travel. I was not a great Spanish student in high school, but I was fortunate enough to travel my senior year, and something just clicked. My freshman year of college I took more Spanish classes and a whole world opened up for me. I love the breadth of things you can cover when learning a language – not just the language, but culture, food, music.

What’s the best thing you did this summer?
My wife and I had some rare time off, so we took a trip to California, visited friends in the northern part of the state, spent some time in San Francisco, and drove down to Santa Cruz and Monterey.

What is your current hobby/interest?
Before we left Tennessee I was really into making furniture. I worked on set production in college and was able to shift that practice into carpentry. I made and sold some pieces, but unfortunately couldn’t move all of the tools to Westminster, so now I’m really into hanging out with my dogs, getting to know our new home in Connecticut and exploring everything we can.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?
I’m looking forward to getting a feel for boarding school life. It’s an extension of the values I place on education, so I’m looking forward to living those values here.
