First Boys’ Hockey

Following their first loss of the season on Friday night, the Martlets hit the road again looking to rebound against an always-tough Trinity-Pawling team the next day. The T.P. rink, with its spirited fans and small ice surface, always proves to be a challenge for the Martlets, and Saturday's game was no different. The home team jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, scoring less then one minute into the game, but J.P. Schuhlen '16 found the equalizer at the end of the first period with a goal assisted by Johnny McDermott '16. The second period was a chippy affair, with both teams collecting a number of penalties and taking advantage of power play opportunities. Brett Roenick '16, Taggart Corriveau '16 and Logan Hinton '17 scored for Westminster to take a tenuous 4-3 lead into the final period. Unfortunately, the Pride found the tying goal late in the third to push the game to overtime. Both teams exchanged a number of good scoring opportunities, but it wasn't until Kevin O'Leary '16 slapped a well-placed shot towards the goal with just 30 seconds left in the game that the Martlets found a winner, as McDermott deflected the puck out of the air and into the net.

First Boys’ Basketball

Westminster took an early lead over Watkinson on Wednesday afternoon and never looked back en route to a big 63-32 win. The Martlets played tough defense throughout the entire game to set the tone for a determined, high-energy game of basketball. Chris Jones '16 led all scorers with 21 points and 6 assists, while Conor Muldoon '16 had a monster game inside the paint, grabbing 13 rebounds on top of his 14 points to notch a double-double. Jack Werner '17 also played gritty defense every time he was on the court, including a play in which he dove into the stands to save an out-of-bounds ball. Watkinson fought hard, but it wasn't enough to handle the Martlets.

First Girls’ Hockey

First Girls' Hockey took Taft down to the wire on Saturday afternoon but could not find the game-winner, ending in a 2-2 tie after an overtime period. After an even first period, Taft took a 1-0 lead in the second, but the Martlets kept fighting and found two goals of their own in the final period to push the game to OT. Katherine Berry '16 scored, with an assist from Hayley Martini '16 near the end of regulation, and Emma Lange '18 took a pass from Lily von Stade '17 and netted another with just under four minutes remaining in the game. Taft held strong through much of the game, with some excellent goal tending matched by the great keeper play of Leah Klassen '17. The teams both traded opportunities in overtime, but neither could find the fabric. It was an exciting, fast-paced game, and well-played by both teams.

Second Girls’ Hockey

Westminster faced a Northfield Mount Hermon team boasting a strong squad of experienced players on Saturday afternoon, but the Martlets came out of the gates amped up and ready to score. Westminster created plenty of scoring opportunities and peppered the NMH goal with shots early on in the contest. Blake Cote '19 got the Martlets on the board first with an unassisted goal midway through the first. Katie Simeon '16 followed soon after, assisted by Natalie Rubin '19, and then Kendall Brown '17 scored off her own rebound to put the birds up 3-0. Katie Nielsen '18 also scored in the first, assisted by Rubin (an amazing goal off the top post with a perfectly timed assist) to put Westminster up 4-0 heading into the second. Simeon scored again in the middle frame, assisted by Georgia Swank '19, and Fraser Allen '17 finished off the scoring for the Black and Gold with a goal assisted by Maggie Kelly '18. NMH stole one back in the third period, but it was too little too late, as the Martlets skated to a 6-1 victory.

Second Boys’ Hockey

Second Boys’ Hockey played three-consecutive overtime games last week – four going back to 2015 – and while the boys dropped the first contest to Avon Old Farms, they came out on top against Hillside on Thursday and ended in a tie with Trinity-Pawling on Saturday. In the team’s Thursday afternoon win, the Martlets found themselves down 2-0 early, but they fought back to push the contest to overtime.

After a rough opening period in which Westminster gave up two unanswered goals, the boys found their energy and play-making ability during the second period and scored a goal to cut the deficit in half. Captain Mac McCormick '16 advanced the puck to Jack Griffith '17, who made a perfect cross-crease pass to Brendan Jacobs '17 to put the Martlets on the board. As the game was winding down in the third period, the Black and Gold put heavy pressure on their opponent in an attempt to find the equalizer. With just 1:30 remaining on the clock in regulation, Max Powers '17, pinching down low from the blue line, collected a McCormick pass and found the back of the Hillside net to tie the game. Westminster then entered their third consecutive overtime game in this young season, and tenth OT including last year. Inexplicably, the Martlets hadn't won any of those extra-time contests. That all changed on Thursday, when the hosts earned a power play as a result of their relentless pressure in the offensive end. Westminster gained possession off the ensuing face-off, and Powers and McCormick worked the puck to Jack Griffith, who took a low, hard slap shot through a Jeffery Guiliano '16 and Jagger LeClair '18 screen to end the game in dramatic fashion. This was a great team effort, highlighted by determination and grit. Goalie Spencer Rellinger '17 and the Martlet defensive corp of Max Powers, Jake Szykowny '17, Tommy Jacobs '16, Walker Stevens '19, Arthur Renehan '17 and Merlin Ennis '17 stepped up their game after a relatively slow start and shut the opponents down after the first period. With stronger fore-checking and play-making from the forwards and a never-quit attitude, the team got a well-deserved victory against a previously undefeated team.

Second Girls’ Squash

The Second Girls Squash team improved their record to 2-0 last week after defeating Loomis by a 6-1 margin on Saturday. The even numbered players got things started, with Lucy Noel '18 (#4) and Annabel Bradley '19 (#6) winning in three straight games. Lucy prevailed 11-6, 11-5 and 11-2, while Annabel won 11-9, 11-8, 11-0. Katherine Ogden '16 (#2) fell in five tight games, losing 11-8 in the final game. Next the odd numbered girls took to the courts and swept the remaining matches. Rachel Halfon '16 (#1) won 11-8, 11-6, 11-5 while Annie Hicks '18 (#3) was victorious by an 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 margin. Katie Kosior '18 (#5) won by an 11-6, 11-8, 11-3 score and Callie Brossman '16 won 11-9, 11-6 and 11-9. Ellie Klein '16, Lily Mahoney '17 and Brinley Cuddeback '17 came out on top in their exhibition matches.
