AP Studio Art Class Visits University of Hartford

Students in Westminster art teacher Kerry Kendall's AP Studio Art course visited the University of Hartford's Hartford Art School Dec. 11 to work on their 2D-Design and Drawing Portfolio.

The intensive three-hour workshop led by the school's department coordinator, Alan Carlstrom, taught the students about such things as figure drawing, shading, proportion and rendering. "It was a fantastic experience, and I was very proud of each of the eight students," said Kerry.

Westminster's AP Studio Art course is an intensive college-level course that requires students to submit a portfolio with 24 of their best pieces in one of three categories: 2D-Design, 3 Dimensional or Drawing.

The portfolio is divided into three sections: The first is quality, in which the students submit five actual pieces of artwork demonstrating their highest potential as artists. The second is breadth, where they submit 12 digital images in a variety of media showing a broad range of excellent work. This is where the figure drawing work from the workshop will be submitted. The final section is concentration, where the students submit 12 digital images of work produced concerning one central idea or theme in a sustained investigation. The portfolios are due May 6. "It requires an incredible amount of time, energy and dedication to complete a portfolio," emphasized Kerry.
