Sports Highlights - 9.21.15

First Field Hockey

First Field Hockey got the season started on Wednesday with an 8-2 win over Northfield Mount Hermon. The girls came out hot, scoring three goals in the opening minutes and heading into halftime with a 5-1 lead. Goals in the first came from Sarah Migliori '16 (2), Sarah Melanson '16, Maddy Paro '17 and Catherine Crawley '16. In the second, Migliori picked up where she left off, slapping in a goal on a beautiful play where she muscled past the Hogger goalie and dove for the ball (head to Westminster's Facebook page for video of this highlight goal). Emma Stevens slotted the last two goals to clinch the win.

Eliza Mell '16 played strong on the right mid, while Madie Bologa '17 stepped up to the NMH attackers and consistently shut them down. Shannon Keefe '19 did well to distribute the ball to Stevens on the left wing, and Lily Farriss '19 worked hard to get the ball back in the offensive end. On the left side, Charlotte Lennox '16 and Lilly Holmes '18 kept a tight rein on the Hoggers to shut down any offensive momentum.

The Martlets had a slower start against Ethel Walker on Saturday but were able to take a narrow 3-1 win. The defense played well in the back to hold onto the slight lead, while Holmes stepped up to play goalie and had a strong showing, making a huge save at the end of the second half to keep the EWS attackers at bay. It was the play of the game.

Crawley and Migliori did good work in the middle of the field to keep the ball moving. Migliori had the sole Martlet goal in the first half. In the second half the girls played with more energy and were more successful getting the ball into the offensive zone, netting two deciding goals from Stevens and Maggie Kelly '18. Farriss played well at right midfield, cutting of the angles and distributing the ball up to her winger. It wasn't the best game for Westminster, but the girls showed grit in their ability to overcome a frustrating start to hold on for the win and go to 2-0 on the young season.

First Girls’ Soccer

First Girls’ Soccer also roasted the Hoggers from Northfield Mount Hermon last week with a 4-0 win in its opening game of the 2015 campaign. It was a great overall team effort in which the girls were able to capitalize on set pieces and maintain possession throughout the majority of the game. The defense played especially well, highlighted by great performances from Emma Alpaugh '18, Katie Simeon '16, Katherine Berry '16 and Katie Deveaux '16, who all worked together to support Cynnie White '17 in an impressive shut out. On the offensive end, Katherine Eckerson '17 and Jacqui Richard '17 had breakout performances, with Eckerson scoring two goals in the first half and Richard scoring two in the second. The girls look to keep the momentum rolling when they take on Deerfield on Wednesday.

Cross-Country

Cross-Country’s meet at Choate over the weekend was technically a scrimmage, but the team ran hard and, despite the relatively young squad, had a very promising showing. Most impressive was the First Place finish for young Emmett de Kanter ’19, who beat the field by over 30 seconds! The team hopes to have another good day at the Canterbury Invitation on Saturday.
