Winter Term Awards Ceremony

Headmaster Bill Philip welcomed members of the Westminster community to the winter term awards ceremony March 27 by saying, “Despite the almost three feet of snow that fell on the campus, we enjoyed a very successful winter.” He recognized members of the grounds crew who worked hard throughout the winter to keep the campus roadways and paths cleared and gave “a special shout-out” to members of girls’ lacrosse who cleared Hovey Field for pre-season training.

He then highlighted student and faculty achievements and initiatives in the visual and performing arts, mathematics, global issues, civic engagement, diversity efforts, athletics and community events.

He also discussed the significant events that took place in American history in March and April 1865 related to the Civil War saying, “150 years ago, in the Civil War, on this date, March 27, 1865, Generals Sherman and Grant met with President Lincoln to prepare for the final defeat of the Confederacy.”

“There was no more intensely violent time in U.S. history than the Civil War,” he continued. “All the same, shortly before his assassination, in his second inaugural address, delivered as he took the oath of office on March 4, 1865, Lincoln offered a remarkably generous national vision for the U.S.”

He pointed out how “goodwill, sensitivity, compassion and forgiveness are necessary for communities to endure and thrive or, as Lincoln appreciated, for a nation to be restored.”

In conclusion, he said, “To me, Lincoln’s approach offers a timeless and promising path forward, and if Lincoln could summon that spirit in the wake of the Civil War, there is no reason why this spirit cannot remain our beacon today, whether in the conduct of our personal affairs or in our discourse about today’s national and international matters.”
