First Girls’ Basketball
Westminster played to a 52-46 win over Wilbraham & Monson Academy in a Friday night showdown on Williams Hill. Meg Richard '15 led the effort with 24 points and 8 rebounds in the win, while Devin Selvala '16 and Sophia Tawney '17 each had 12 rebounds and Tawney added 6 points. Emma Merlin '16 scored 10 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 3 assists, and Jacqui Richard '16 played the entire game, adding had 9 points and 5 assists. The girls took a 10-point halftime lead on the strength of 11-14 free throw shooting. WMA chipped away and got as close as 42-39 in the second half, but key baskets by Tawney and Merlin, as well as clutch free throws by Jacqui Richard, extended the Martlet lead. A dramatic three-pointer by Meg Richard seemed to close the game out, but WMA responded with a triple of their own. Meg Richard nailed another jumper to put the game out of reach as the clock wound down. It was a great effort on a night when the team was depleted by injury and absences of the Model UN, and the girls were thrilled to have the support of an incredibly vocal home crowd.

First Boys’ Basketball
The Martlets earned a hard-fought 55-50 victory over Loomis Chaffee on Wednesday in front of an excited home crowd. The boys went up by a large margin at the half, but the Pelicans made a comeback in the second to close the gap. Some solid defense and a few crucial shots put Westminster on top to close out the win.

First Boys' Hockey
The First Boys’ Hockey game got off to an interesting start for the home team, as they gave up a breakaway goal on the third shift in. Jack Fitzgerald '15 answered right back, taking a great pass up the middle of the ice from Tim Sanford '16 for a shorthanded goal. The first period ended 2-1 in favor of the Martlets after Taggart Corriveau '16 put the boys ahead with a goal assisted by Peter Horsfall '17 and Anthony Di Placido '15. Corriveau notched his second of the game to extend the lead to 3-1 on a breakaway goal in the second, and Kevin O'Leary '16 followed soon after with a short side power-play goal assisted by Joe O'Connor '16. In the third, the Martlets spent a lot of time on the power-play, and it paid off, as Fitzgerald scored once more from in the slot. Nick Sanford '16 settled into a 15 save game, including many key stops on penalty kills.

First Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets notched two wins last week to put their record at a solid 7-1-5, earning a 4-1 victory on the road against Millbrook on Wednesday and then taking a 3-0 home win over Hotchkiss on a snowy Saturday afternoon.

The girls got off to a hot start in the early game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first period off of a pair of goals from Erin Ozturk '15 - one assisted by Catherine Crawley '16 and another assisted by Crawley and Lilly Holmes '18. After a scoreless second period, Millbrook took a goal back in the final frame, but the Martlets ran away with it as Crawley scored two in the waning minutes of the game with assists going to Ozturk and Holmes.

In the next contest, Westminster took a while to warm up but took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first when Ozturk snagged a pass from Ashley Carbone '16 and slotted it past the keeper. After a scoreless, frenetic second period, the Martlets knew they had to score again in the third to ice the game, and they answered the call. With 5 minutes left in the game, Crawley scored a goal, assisted by Ozturk, to put the team up 2-0. Shortly after, with Hotchkiss scrambling to get the goals back, Emma Lange '18 scored off of a pass from Sarah Migliori '16 to close out the 3-0 win.

First Girls’ Squash
Westminster’s First Girls’ Squash team won their double-header on Wednesday afternoon, taking Pomfret and Berkshire down with identical 5-2 scores. Abby LeBlanc '17 continued to play strong squash, running her season record to 6-0, while Ginny Durfee '15 improved to 6-1. Sophie Skinner '15 gutted out two five-game matches on the day, and Wells Poler ’16, Julia Cooper ’15 and Katie Deveaux ’16 also recorded wins. The girls are gaining valuable experience and stepping up their games, playing in their seventh consecutive close match (5-2 or 4-3).

First Boys’ Squash
The Martlets played two extremely tight matches on Wednesday afternoon, splitting the difference with a 5-2 win over Pomfret and a 3-4 loss against Exeter.
The boys won their tight contest against Pomfret by a final score of 5-2. Out of a total of 28 games played, 11 went to oversets, including two 15-13 scores and two 14-12 scores. The teams split two three game matches with Pomfret winning 3-0 at #4 and Westminster’s Wonjune Kang ’16 winning 3-0 at #2. There were three four-game matches, with Pomfret winning 3-1 at #3 and the Martlets winning at #5 and #7. Then, to top it all off, there were two five-gamers at #1 and #6, both won by Westminster 15-13 in the fifth. Although the #1 match was exciting to the end, with Cal Perkins ‘15 coming from behind and getting sharper as the match wore on, the overall team match was already decided at that point. The key match was really played by Addison Cilmi '16 at #6, fighting off three match balls before emerging victorious 15-13. This isn't meant to diminish Will Leathers ‘17 winning 11-9 in the fourth and deciding game or Declan Horrigan ‘16 winning 14-12 also in four. Both of those matches could easily have swung to Pomfret's favor, but the Westminster boys fought hard and emerged with a resilient 5-2 team win.

Second Boys’ Hockey
The Seconds team rolled last week, winning 6-2 over Cathedral High School on Wednesday, and then taking down Loomis Chaffee 9-1 on Saturday.

The boys started strong on Wednesday, scoring twice in the opening period. Alec Costanza '16 put in the initial goal from the slot after Max Torrez '18 and Jake Szykowny '17 battled to keep the puck in the zone to earn the assists. Next, Costanza made a pretty neutral ice pass to spring Torrez on a breakaway chance. The middle period turned out to be a very sloppy one for the Martlets, as Cathedral outscored the home team two goals to one to make the score 3-2. The sole Westminster goal in the period came off of Torrez’s stick for his second goal of the game, with assists going to Max Powers '16 and Mac McCormick '16. However, the third period saw the Martlets take control of the game by denting the cords three times with no response from Cathedral. Co-captain Drew Simeon '15 scored two nice goals, assisted by Costanza, McCormick and Jack Griffith '17, followed by a goal from Powers, assisted by Costanza.

Next, the Martlets met the Pelicans of Loomis in an early afternoon game at Jackson Rink on Saturday afternoon. The home team played well and created many scoring opportunities, capitalizing on nine of them to take the game 9-1. In a tightly contested first period, Westminster skated away with a 2-0 advantage. Torrez began the scoring late in the opening frame, assisted by line mate McCormick. Shortly thereafter, Brett Roenick '16 ripped a shot after a pretty feed by Miller Guth '16 and Jack Griffith '17. Westminster began the second period committing several penalties and generally playing out of sync. Loomis took advantage by scoring their first of the game to narrow the score to 2-1. Fortunately, the team regained their rhythm and netted four unanswered goals before the middle period ended. Goal scorers were McCormick, Costanza, Zach Orzech '16 and Chris Connal '16. Those earning assists were Torrez (2), McCormick, Griffith, Roenick and Simeon. The black and gold continued their scoring ways in the third period, adding three more tallies to the scoreboard. McCormick and Costanza both earned their second goals of the game, and Powers scored and added an assist. Additional assists went to Roenick, Torrez and Ryan Seymour '15. It was a fine team effort for Westminster with many very nice plays and finishes on the 35 shots taken. Spencer Rellinger '17 made all but one save on the 19 shots he faced in net.

Second Girls’ Hockey
Second Girls' Hockey has been making a habit of playing both high-scoring offense and stifling shutout defense, and the trend continued on Wednesday afternoon, as the girls defeated Taft 8-0 at home. The Taft goalie made some great saves, but the Martlets' firepower proved too overwhelming in the end. The home team took a 3-0 lead into the second period, scored two more in the middle frame and then closed out the game with another three goals. Goal scorers on the day were Anne Bitterli '16, Ana Wigmore '16, Eliza Christman '15, Katie Simeon '16, Susanna Baker '15, Kendall Brown '17, Katie Neilson '18 and Maggie Kelly '18. Westminster had a few close calls in their defensive zone, but the Martlets skated hard to get back and stop Taft from taking any shots on goal. A sign of the great team balance, all but one of the girls on the Seconds squad have recorded a goal this season.

Second Boys’ Squash
The Black and Gold traveled to Pomfret on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Griffins and came away with an 8-1 victory. There were a number of tight matches, with one going to five games and three others to four (Westminster won three of the four matches). The others were decided in straight games, but despite the lopsided final match score, the individual matches were quite competitive and filled with many entertaining and athletic points.

In the first round, Bryan Yekelchik '16, playing at #1 for the JV for the first time this year, split the first two games (5 and (11)) before hitting his stride and modifying the pace of his shots to close out the match at 3 and 3. George Knight '15, who is improving by leaps and bounds, won his match at #2 in three hotly contested games (8, 8, 8). George Doolan '15 continued his run of good squash, mixing good drives to length with deft drop shots in a 7, 10, 3 victory at #5. Connor Seeley '18 won his third consecutive straight-game victory at #9 using a variety of shots to win 11-4, 11-9, 11-4. To close out the first round, Jack Sargent '17 pulled out a wild five-game victory by rallying from a 1-2 deficit to take the final two games at 7 and 6. In the second round, Chris Hark '17 battled both a solid opponent and his own frustrations in a four-game loss ((9), 11, (10), and (3)), while Luke Tressy '17, just back from an injury, found his game after splitting the first two games, 8 and (5), to close out the match with 11-5 and 12-10 wins at #2. Niles Nicholas '17 won his first game 11-1 at #6, but then his opponent woke up and Nicholas found himself in a dog fight, taking the second game 12-10 and the third 13-11. Nicholas' opponent hit the ball almost as hard as Nicholas, so the match devolved into a slugfest. Fortunately, Nicholas won just enough of the power points to secure the victory. Finally, at #4, Chanler Miller '18 took command of his match from the get-go, using a wide variety of drives, lobs, and drop shots to sweep his opponent at #4, 3 and 3.

Second Girls’ Squash
The Second Girls squash team hosted Pomfret and prevailed by a 7-0 margin. Sarah Poling '16, Dora Mitchel '17, Isabel Tibbetts '16 and Annie Hicks '17 all won their matches to get the Martlets off to a 4-0 score after the odd number matches. Abby Newman '16, Katherine Ogden '16 and Rachel Halfon '16 completed the scoring in the even matches. Ellie Klein '17 won both of her exhibition matches in three straight games.

Third Boys’ Squash
Westminster hosted a young and determined Renbrook squad on Tuesday for an afternoon of good, competitive squash. The visitors’ #1 player proved to be a formidable opponent for Minh Nguyen ’16, as his vast array of shots kept Nguyen off-balance for the duration of the match. That turned out to be the only loss for the Martlets. Sean Ryan ’18 and Chris Zheng ’17 were both victorious in seesaw battles that went the full five games, with Zheng coming back from a 2-1 deficit. In a very even match, Max Grout ’17 used his quickness and athleticism to pull out a 3-1 win. Andrew Doucette ’18 and Hayden Cathcart ’18 swept their respective opponents by executing well-placed drop shots and hitting to good length to the back corners. The steady and unflappable Dylan Murphy “17 defeated a tenacious adversary at #2, winning in three games, 7,5, and 10. Meanwhile, Joe Patrina ’18, Spencer Organ ’18, and Matthew Swenson ’17 were in control from start to finish, never allowing their opponents more than four points in any given game. And finally, Ryan Lee ’18 saw his hard work in practice come to fruition with a decisive 3-0 win.
