Sports Highlights 05.19.2014

First Softball
Once again, the Martlets won the Western New England Class A Tournament, making this their sixth title in seven years. The Martlets defeated Loomis 3-0 and Williston 12-4 to earn the championship. Against Loomis, Amanda Savino ’14 struck out 10 and pitched a one-hit shutout. The Martlets went up 2-0 in the first inning. Jordan Gowdy ’14 walked, Kat Pate ’14 and Rachel Monroe ’14 singled, and Brooke Wolejko ’14 launched a double to deep left field. Brenna Monroe ’17 scored the third and last run of the game in the sixth when Jade Marlowe ’15 drove her home with a single. In the championship game, Rachel Monroe and Marlowe each had three hits and two runs batted in for the Martlets, and Pate had a two-run homer. Savino pitched a strong game, and Gowdy threw out multiple runners attempting to steal. Wolejko, Gabby Brown ’17 and Brenna Monroe all made important fielding plays for Westminster.
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
Tristan Rai ’14 went three and three with some exciting goals to lead the Martlets (8-6) over the NMH.  Angelo Hunt ’14 (five saves) and Dylan Moser '15 (eight saves) were strong in goal while Evan Doodian ’14 (game ball) knocked down four passes and grabbed four GBs.  The close D squad of Doodian, Pierce Cote ’14 and Mike Benincasa ’14 combined for 10 GBs.  Brian Smyth ’16, Michael Logan ’14 and Zac Hamilton ’14 worked very well at the FOSmyth also added two goals with Seymour (two), Dardani (one) and Jack Fitzgerald ’15 (one) rounding out the scoring.
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
After not having a game in two weeks, the Martlets were ready to fly from the opening whistle to defeat Salisbury 13-1. The home team exploded for nine goals in the first quarter. Leading the way was Manny Meltzer ’17 with five goals and two assists. JP Wade ’17 had a breakout game with three goals in the second half. Keeping control of the face-off circle was Alec Costanza ’17, who also had two goals and an assist. Jake Szykowny ’17 played feeder and had three assists and a goal. Jeremy Cutler ’17 worked hard on attack and finished the game with a goal and an assist. Chris Hark ’17 closed out the game with a goal assisted by Andrew Lee ’17. Duncan Kellogg ’15 had three highlight saves and finished the game with five total. The game ball went to Meltzer for his five-goal performance in the first quarter.
 
First Girls’ Tennis
After defeating Loomis 6-3 earlier in the week, the Martlets traveled to Hotchkiss to play Miss Porter’s in the quarterfinals of the Class B New England Tournament.  In doubles, the Martlets pulled ahead in all three matches, but it was the No. 2 team of Ginny Durfee ’15 and Julia Cooper ’15, and the No. 3 team of Annie Lacey ’14 and Katherine Ogden ’16 who brought home the first two wins for the Black and Gold.  In singles, the Martlets were able to earn wins in the No. 3-No. 5 spots to secure the victory.  Durfee was particularly efficient in her match winning 6-2, 6-0.  Cooper held on 7-5 in the second set to keep her match from extending to a third.  Ogden rallied after dropping the second set.  She overcame her frustration and persevered to win the super tiebreaker 10-7.  Westminster faced a strong Berkshire squad in the semifinals and could not overcome the talented Bears.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
In a close duel with Loomis, the Martlets were able to win by taking No. 4 singles and all three doubles matches. Emma Alfeld ’16 displayed a strong all-around game in winning her first singles action of the season. The doubles team of Sarah Poling ’16 and Susie Carter ’15 ran their season record to 3-1 at No.1, while Elizabeth Foster ’15 and Callie Brossman ’16 won for the third time in their last five outings at No. 2. The final and deciding point was earned by Vicky Carillo ’14 and Nina Montross ’16.
 
Second Golf
The Martlets finished their season with two more winning rounds of golf. They won a quad match on Wednesday with a score of 209; Choate (217); Taft (222) and Hotchkiss (224). Wonjune Kang ’16 and Jack Griffith ’17 were match medalists, both shooting a 39. Other scores included Brett Roenick ’16 (43); Tommy Babington ’15 (44); Owen Johnson ’17 (48); and Preston Eppler ’16 (43). In their final match, the undefeated Martlets took on Avon. Teddy Sirbaugh ’16 was match medalist shooting a 38. Byron Tomcik ’15, Kang, Roenick and Griffith all shot 41. MacKenzie Hawkes ’15 came in with a 42.
 
First Girls’ Lacrosse
On Thursday, the Martlets played their last home game under the Hovey Field lights and defeated Miss Porter’s 12-6. Mary French ’15, Susanna Baker ’15, Sarah Migliori ’16, Eliza Christman ’15, Kelcie Finn ’14 and StinaLadd ’15 all popped in goals for the evening. The defense played well, with a noteworthy job done by Katie Savage ’15 between the pipes because she stopped nine shots. Sarah Melanson ’16 had some nice moments in the transition, working well with Katie O'Connor ’15, Nina Wilmerding ’15 and Baker.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets earned a win on the road against Porter’s 11-4. The Martlets got on the board first and had a big first half, which ended with a 7-2 lead. Emma Merlin ’16 ended the day with three goals and Emily Mell ’14, Annie Bitterli ’16, Lexi Organ ’16, Georgia Morley ’15, Katie Hovey ’14, Alyssa DiMaria’ 15 and Emily Kandarian ’15 each netted one. Evie Pope ’16, Katie Deveaux ’16 and Katherine Berry ’16 made a big impact on defense to keep the game out of reach for Porter’s.
 
First Baseball
In a truly courageous display of pure Grit, Nick Rocco ’15 returned from his devastating eye injury to pitch eight remarkable innings of baseball as the Martlets defeated Kent by a score of 13-2. Rocco allowed only five hits while striking out seven Kent batters and throwing a strikes to balls ratio of 3:1. Of equal note was the explosive hitting display produced by Carl Doucette ’16 who had two home runs (one of which was a grand slam), a double off the fence and a single along with eight runs batted in. Additional offense was provided by the bats of Toby Casper ’14 (two doubles), Jordan Barnes ’16 (a double and two singles), Scott Williams ’16 and Vincent Ferraro ’14 (both with two singles). Additional hitting was supplied by Tyler Buckley ’15, Mike McNally ’14 and Luke Tressy ’16.
 
First Boys’ Tennis
Back-to-back wins for the Martlets occurred this week as they beat Kent and Loomis.
Defeating the Lions 6-1, Westminster won the doubles point, and then in singles, the Martlets won fairly easily. Andrew Bell ’14 at No. 2, Harry Ganek ’14 at No. 3, Stephen McCormick ’14 at No. 4, GustavsGerkens ’15 at No. 5 and Carol Comia ’14 at No. 6 all won in two sets sealing the victory for Westminster. In a great match with the Pelicans that spanned two days due to weather delays, the Martlets secured the doubles point and then pulled out three singles matches. Despite being injured, Heumann at No. 4 pulled out a three-set win as did McCormick at No. 5 and Gerkens and at No. 6.
 
Second Boys’ Tennis
Saturday’s match against Avon came down to the final singles match. The Martlets took the doubles point with Mario Benicky ’14 and Erik Rost ’14 winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles Hart Green ’15 and Frank Sullivan ’15 winning in a tie-breaker. Benicky won in singles and Johnny McDermott ’16 played great tennis winning 6-1, 6-2 to pull the Martlets even. Green played the final match as an eight-game pro set and was able to hold on for an 8-6 win and a 4-3 team victory.
