Sports Highlights 05.12.2014

First Softball
The Martlets notched three more wins this week with victories over Ethel Walker, an undefeated Choate squad and Miss Porter’s. In the first duel of the week, Jordan Gowdy ’14 had three hits (triple, double, single), and Amanda Savino ’14 pitched a terrific game to lead Westminster to a win over Ethel Walker. Against the Wild Boars, Savino pitched a strong game and also drove in four runs to lead Westminster. Rachel Monroe ’14 had a big double in the fifth inning, and Brooke Wolejko launched a home run in the seventh inning. Jade Marlowe ’15 played well defensively, with five put-outs in the field. Paige Capistran ’16 and Catherine Crawley ’16 made important catches in the outfield. The Martlets defeated Miss Porter’s School 16-1 and won the Founders League title for the sixth time in seven years. Rachel Monroe had a grand slam, a triple, and six runs batted in for the Martlets. Savino pitched a gem, allowing just three Miss Porter’s hits. Savino, Gowdy, Kat Pate ’14 and Wolejko had two hits apiece on Senior Day, and Lizzie Hark ’14 played well in right field.
 
Second Boys’ Tennis
The Martlets traveled to Kingswood Oxford and won 6-1. Doubles started slowly for Mario Benicky ’14 and Erik Rost ’14 at No.1, but they came from behind and won 8-6. Cal Perkins ’15 and Johnny McDermott ’16 won 8-2, and Frank Sullivan ’15 and Hart Green ’15 won their match 8-4. In singles, Mark Pfister ’14 opened the win column with an 8-6 victory. Benicky, McDermott and Rost were the other three winners to round out all of the matches.
 
First Golf
The Martlets came away with a solid 197 to 222 victory over visiting Canterbury School. Captain Philippe Morin ’15 was the tournament medalist with an even par round of 36, followed closely by George Doolan ’15 with a score of 37 (+1). Other Westminster scores included TaggartCorriveau ’16 (39), Addison Cilmi ’16 (41), Rylan Williams ’16 (44) and Ted Sirbaugh ’16 (47).
 
Second Golf
It was another convincing win for the Second Golf team as it defeated Kent 206 to 227. Will Swanson ’14 was match medalist with a fine two over par 38. Other Westminster scores included Wonjune Kang ’16 (42), MacKenzie Hawkes ’15 (40) and John Dowling ’14 (45). Playing in their first Westminster golf contest were Tommy Babington ’15 (49) and Jack Griffith ’17 (41).
 
First Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets earned wins against Berkshire and Kent. Against the Bears, Westminster came out flying at both ends of the field with smart and fast ball movement on offense as well as aggressive defense. Dyaln Moser ’15 (12 saves and game ball) may have frustrated the Bears’ sharp shooters with some big saves in the second quarter to give Westminster an 8-2 lead at the half. Three goals in the first five minutes of the third, one each by Brian Smyth ’16, Tristan Rai ’14, and Ryan Seymour ’15 gave the Martlets the confidence they needed to put the game away. Rai went four and one on the day, while Sam Dardani ’14 was two and two, and Pat Brandell ’15 had three assists.
 
Second Boys’ Lacrosse
The Black and Gold earned a convincing 9-0 win, with Trent Lefler ’16 and Austin Pope ’15 mounting a rare shutout against Berkshire. The team continued its strong defensive effort with Teddy Batchelder ’16, Jack Sargent ’17, Hughie Plumb ’17, Jackson Andrews ’17, Sam Worcester ’16, Peter Johnson ’15 and Brian Yekelchik ’16 leading the way. The offense developed a good tempo and steadily increased the lead with scoring coming from a variety of contributors.
 
First Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets managed wins over Choate, Kingswood Oxford and Hopkins. Westminster had a gritty win versus the Wild Boars. After starting down, Eliza Christman ’15 got Westminster back in the game with three goals in a row (five goals on the day). On defense, Isabel Tibbetts ’15 and Ellie Deveaux ’14 had a number of good ground balls, and Katie Savage ’15 ensured the win in the last minute of the game with a glorious save. Other goal scorers included Sarah Migliori ’16, Mary French ’15 and Susanna Baker ’15.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
Three games and three wins were earned by the Martlets this week. Against Choate, Evie Pope ’16 played a fantastic game in goal and ended the day with a 50 percent save rate. Emily Mell ’14, Alaina Bisson ’15, Katie Deveaux ’16 and Katherine Berry ’16 stymied Choate’s offense for most of the game. The Martlet attack was well balanced as seven different players scored. Maddie Paro ’17, Katie Hovey ’14 and Emily Kandarian ’15 each had two goals and Annie Bitterli ’16, Georgia Morley ’15, Abby Newman ’16 and Emma Merlin ’16 each notched one. Against Hopkins, the Martlets jumped out to a big lead after the first half. Bitterli ended the day with three goals and two assists. Alyssa DiMaria ’15 and Emma Merlin ’16 also scored three, and Captain Meggie Gresham ’14 and Kate Breed ’15 notched their first goals of the season.
 
Second Girls’ Tennis
The Martlets managed a 4-3 win over Porter’s. The No. 2 doubles team of Elizabeth Foster ’15 and Callie Brossman ’16 were dominant in a 6-1, 6-1 win. The No. 3 doubles team of Emma Alfeld ’16 and Vicky Carillo ’14 earned a straight set win of their own. Susie Carter ’15 brought the Martlets to within a point of the team win when she prevailed in a somewhat tighter No. 4 singles match, 7-5, 6-3. Sarah Poling ’16 at No. 3 singles clinched the victory with a narrow win.
