Sixth Former Named Winner of Fresh Voices Poetry Competition

Taite Puhala ’14 has been selected as one of the winners of the Fresh Voices Poetry Competition sponsored by the Sunken Garden Poetry Festival. She and the other four winners will read in the Sunken Garden on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. to an audience of hundreds. A musical performance will take place before the reading, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

“The 15 finalists were all outstanding young poets, but Taite’s reading was magnificent, and she definitely deserved to be chosen as one of the winners,” said Michael Cervas, head of the English Department. The four judges, all professional poets, included Brad Davis, who was a Friday Night Reader at Westminster four years ago, and Benjamin Grossberg, who will be a Friday Night Reader next January.

Taite is the third Westminster student to win this competition. Karen Walter ’94 was one of five winners in 1994, the second year of the competition; Steve Frechette ’04 was one of six winners in 2004; and now Taite is one of five winners in 2014.

Since 1993, student poets from all corners of Connecticut have entered the competition and mentoring program.
