Sports Highlights 01.27.2014

First Boys’ Squash
The Martlets had a 2-1 week that included traveling long distances for matches. The boys voyaged to T-P and came away with a 7-0 win. The Martlets dropped only one game in the contest. WonjuneKang ’16 allowed only five points in his impressive victory at No. 6. The Black and Gold also had a 6-1 win over Andover. Alvin Heumann ’14 finished the day 2-0 with a strong win against a talented No. 1. Will Swanson ’14 earned his first victory for the first team with his best squash of the season at No. 7.
 
Second Boys’ Squash
The Martlets (6-2) hosted the varsity squad from Williams School and delivered the win with only two losses. The Black and Gold won matches Nos. 3-9, all of them in straight games except for No. 3 where Andrew Bell ’14 won in four games. Luke Tressy ’16, Ben Shaver ’16, Bryan Yekelchik ’16, DeclanHorrigan ’16 and Jeremy Mason ’16 were victorious for the Martlets.

Third Boys’ Squash
Westminster defeated Avon 7-0, but the match was much closer than the final score indicated. Three of the top seven matches, and six out of 11 overall, were decided in the fifth and final game. Jake Beizer ’15, Nick Rohn ’15 and Jeremy Mason ’16 all were winners in five. Mac Larned ’16, Minh Nguyen ’16 and Declan Horrigan ’16 managed easier victories for the Black and Gold.
 
First Girls’ Squash
The girls played some of their best squash of the season in collecting two wins in Rye. Opening against Sacred Heart, the Martlets didn't drop a game en route to a sweep. In the second match, against Rye CD, the girls were pushed hard, but were determined not to lose a third close match in four days. In the first round, Cricket diGaloma ’14, Laily Samy ’14 and Katherine Kelter ’14 were efficient in their 3-0 wins. Charlotte Poler ’14, Abby LeBlanc ’17 and Ginny Durfee ’15 needed four to put away their opponents. Margot Frank ’15 had the match of the day winning in five tough games.
 
Third Girls’ Squash
The Martlets made the short trip to Porter’s and scored a decisive victory. Isabel Tibbetts ’15, Katherine Odgen ’15, Meggie Gresham ’14, Georgia Morley ’15, Callie Brossman ’15, Kelly Andrien ’14 and Emma Filler ’15 all were winners in the top seven spots. Lexie Miller ’15 was victorious in an exhibition match.
 
First Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets secured a solid win over a strong team from Williston 2-1. The Wildcats grabbed the lead in the first. In the second, Katie Savage ’15 took it upon herself to tie the score. In a tightly contested third, Tori DeAngelis ’14 took a pass from Sarah Melanson ’16 and scored for the game winner. Over the last four minutes, it was the Brooke Wolejko ’14 made some excellent saves and shut the door.
 
Second Girls’ Hockey
The Martlets brought their Grit and Grace to Canterbury and earned an excellent win. Westminster controlled the tempo from the first puck drop, scoring seven total goals. Abby Reed ’14, Megan Walsh ’14, Maddy Paro ’17 and Mackenzie Griffith ’17 played smart, confident defense, protecting Cynnie White ’17, who stepped in to play goalie for her first time this year. White had a handful of strong saves.
 
Girls’ Swimming and Diving
The Westminster girls were at their best against Canterbury, kicking off the meet with a decisive victory in the 200 Medley Relay turned in by NorniaXu ’17, Alex Kavle ’15, Leta Giordano ’17 and captain Emily Kunsman ’15. Giordano went on to win the next event, the 200 Freestyle. Giordano and Kavle dialed up a 1-2 finish in the 100 Butterfly. Nathali Madrid ’17 powered to second place in her inaugural 500 Freestyle race. Erin Haydon ’16 and Xu took second and third respectively in the 100 Back, and then Kavle and Kunsman took second and third in the 100 Breaststroke.
 
Boys’ Swimming and Diving
The Westminster boys traveled to Williston and were able pull together in the final races and bring home a victory, 94-83. Individual event winners included co-captain Henry Chou ’15, who dominated the IM and the 100 Fly, co-captain Toby Casper ’15, winner of the 50 Free and 100 Breast, and Jordan Gabbidon ’17 in the 100 Backstroke. Jack Norman ’16 and James Hsieh ’15 teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the diving, respectively. The 200 Medley Relay team of co-captain Travis Percy ’15, Casper, Chou and Tom Dudzik ’15 won that race, and the 400 Free Relay team of Chou, Percy, Gabbidon and Casper was also victorious.
 
First Boys’ Hockey
The Martlets won at home against the Big Green of Deerfield. The game got off to a great start for the home team as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Johnny McDermott ’16 and Michael Benincasa ’14 scored. Deerfield tied it up late in the period, but the Martlets answered as Anthony Di Placido ’15 tipped home a shot to go up 3-2. In the third, Anthony Di Placido ’15 found TaggartCourriveaus ’16 to go up by two. Courriveau finished the scoring on an empty net goal. Zac Hamilton ’14 finished the game with 24 saves.
 
Second Boys’ Hockey
The Seconds were on the road against Williston Northampton School and drove away with a well-earned 5-1 victory. Westminster got two power play goals in the first period from Ryan Seymour ’15 and Philippe Morin ’15. Up 2-1 in the second, the Martlets regained a two-goal lead when Morin scored again. In the third, Stephen McCormick ’14 earned the fourth Martlet goal of the day, and Zack Orzech ’16 completed the scoring. Ben Bauchiero ’14 steered aside all but one of the 17 shots on his cage.
 
First Girls’ Basketball
After a slow start, the Martlets came together to defeat Hopkins. Emma Merlin ’16, Jacqui Richard ’16 and Oumou Kanoute ’17 played great defense in the second half to secure the win. Kanoute, Richard and Merlin combined for 21 points, and Sophia Tawney ’17 had several blocked shots, rebounds and assists. Rachel Monroe ’14, who rarely missed, made a school-record 10 three-pointers and tallied 30 points, the highest single-game total for any Martlet girls’ player in at least the past 14 years.
 
Second Girls’ Basketball
Westminster played well against KO and won 32-20. The Martlets were in control of the game early on and got very good play from their bench. Gabby Brown ’17 led all scorers with 15 points. Unique Shakoor ’15 was excellent in the forecourt and backcourt scoring six and handling the ball very well.
 
First Boys’ Basketball
Chris Jones ’16 scored a game-high 24 points while MarquetNewsome ’14 dished 12 assists as the Martlets edged a tough team from AOF in front of a great home crowd. Captain Mike McNally ’14 came up big in the second half, hitting some key shots and grabbing big rebounds down the stretch. In a game of runs, the Martlets came out on top with great defense by Sam Dardani ’14, and some big three’s from Jones. Dalton Prendergast ’15 (10 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks) played well in the post down the stretch.
