Math Club Competes in Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament

Quick, how many positive integers less than 1 million are divisible by some perfect cube greater than 1? That is one of the many questions members of the Westminster Math Club contemplated Nov. 9 at the sixth annual Harvard-MIT Mathematics Competition.

More than 800 students from over 100 schools participated in the tournament, some from as far away as California. They competed in a variety of events testing the mathematical acumen of the best and the brightest. The tournament, which alternates venues between the Harvard and MIT campuses, was held this year at MIT.

The Westminster students who attended were Grace Brentano ’16, Tim Chartier ’14, Henry Chou ’15, Heiu Do ’15, Tom Dudzik ’15, Gustavs Gerkens ’15, Cindy Jeong ’17, Wonjune Kang ’16, Dominica Park ’14, Soon Park ’14 and Taite Pahula ’14.

Competing both individually and as a group, the members of the two Westminster teams were challenged throughout the day with engaging and interesting problems, all of which were written and compiled by Harvard and MIT undergraduates. “All in all, it was a fulfilling and inspirational day in Cambridge for the Westminster participants,” said Westminster math teacher Dan Aber. He added that, by the way, the answer to the opening question is 168,089.
