Crowdsourcing Yields Photo Exhibition

Westminster’s Chapel Gallery will feature an exhibit titled “Crowdsourcing Westminster: Images for the Asking” Nov. 18 through Dec. 18 that includes 250 digital images submitted by members of the school community.

According to the gallery’s director, John Sandoval, the genesis for the exhibition was inspired by a TED presentation, “The Art Of Asking,” featuring Amanda Palmer.

“The first exhibition in the Chapel Gallery featured five art educators, followed by a larger inclusion of student artists, and this exhibition expands to represent the larger Westminster community,” he said. “Crowdsourcing is an excellent bedfellow for launching an exhibition such as this, and it is hopeful that it will result in myriad conversations about personal experiences which were recorded through digital photography.”

“With the proliferation of Apps for smartphones and special effects in digital cameras, a quick instant touch of a button can yield the same results as those in a darkroom, and more special effects are being added to our vocabulary of visual imagery,” he said. “The strength and generosity of this show says something profound about the positive values and creativity of the Westminster community.”

The opening reception for the exhibition will take place Nov. 18 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Following that, the free show will be open to the public on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Fridays from noon until 1:30 p.m., when Westminster is in session. (It will be closed during Thanksgiving break, Nov. 22 - Dec. 2) The gallery is located on the lower level of Andrews Memorial Chapel.
