Sports Highlights 10.14.2014

First Field Hockey
After a tough loss to Hotchkiss, the Martlets rebounded with a big 2-1 victory over a solid Williston squad. From the opening whistle, the Martlets played a very skilled, composed style of play with incredible team support all over the field. Although Westminster was dominating play, Williston scored the first goal to take an early lead. The Black and Gold tied up the game 10 minutes into the second half after Kelcie Finn '14 buried a penalty stroke. Although the Black and Gold had several scoring chances in the second half, the go-ahead goal didn't come until the final three minutes of the game. Westminster secured the victory on a penalty corner after Shannon Cherpak '14 scored off of an assist from Susanna Baker '15. Maddy Paro '17, Ashley Carbone ’16, and Abby Reed played well on defense.

Second Field Hockey
The Martlets played their best game of the season as they faced off against Williston on their turf. After applying a great deal of pressure, the Martlets went up 1-0 when forward AlainaBisson '15 scored off a shot by Nina Wilmerding '15. Later in the half, Eliza Mell '16 took a quick shot and Georgia Morley ’15 followed up, sneaking behind the goalie to make sure the rebound found its way to the back of the net. In the second half, the Martlets dominated play, executing some of the best passing of the year. With just seven minutes to play, Mell drove down the right side of the field and sent a beautiful cross into the circle. Morley redirected and scored her second goal of the game. Goaltender Hadley Smith '15 held down the defensive end and encouraged her teammates as they battled.

Third Field Hockey
On their Hill Holiday, the Martlets were victorious over Renbrook. The Martlets were on fire from the first whistle. The first goal came on a corner, when Rachel Halfon ’16 hit the ball into the circle, it rebounded off the goalie's pads, and Erin Gorham '16 was there to redirect the ball into the corner of the goal. To go up 2-0, Maggie DeDomenico '16 drilled a ball into the goal from the top of the circle.  In the second half, Renbrook applied pressure, but the Martlets maintained their composure. With eight minutes left in the second half, DeDomenico made a great assist from the top of the circle to teammate Sydney Autorino ’17 for a tip in. The second half was filled with lots of pressure on the Renbrook defense, with an end result of 18 offensive corners on the game for Westminster. Joanna Beach '16 had three saves in goal.

First Girls’ Soccer
It was an exciting week as Westminster earned two 1-0 wins against Hotchkiss and Williston. In both games, Laura Moore ’14 converted for the Martlets. Sally Sandoval ’14 and Brittany Swanson ’14 had the assists. Rachel Monroe ’14 earned the shutout in both games. All in all, the Martlets are playing well and together as a team, shutting down their opponents and creating opportunities for themselves.

Second Girls’ Soccer
The Martlets continue to dominate their opponents with wins over Hotchkiss and Willston. Emma Merlin (2), Katherine Eckerson ’16, and Paige Brackett '16 combined for the 4-0 victory over the always tough Bearcats. Against the Wildcats, Lexi Organ '16 and Kiley Loureiro '15 scored, but Williston responded with one of their own before the first half ended. In the second led by the outstanding play of Merlin, who made great runs and delivered many good passes, Westminster scored two more times. Most significantly, the Martlet defenders kept Williston scoreless and shotless in the second half.

Third Girls’ Soccer
On their Hill Holiday, the Martlets hosted Renbrook in what turned out to be a great soccer match.  Sarah Burstein '15 and Em Burstein '17 scored the two goals in the 2-1 win.  Sarah Minella '17 stood out in the midfield, and Cynnie White '17 was a rock in goal.

Third Boys’ Soccer
The Martlets earned a much-deserved 1-0 victory against neighboring Avon.  The Martlets played some of their best soccer of the year at the beginning of the contest, controlling and moving the ball with great precision.  The boys got on the board in the middle of the first half when Joe O'Connor '16 found Chris Connal '16 in the center of the box, and Connal finished the ball nicely with a rocket to the upper left corner of the net.  The defense played well with Bryan Yekelchik '16 and Nick Sanford '16 limiting the Winged Beavers' shots on goal.
