Sports Highlights 05.20.2013

First Boys’ Lacrosse
In the team’s fourth 9-8 win of the season so far, and their seventh one-goal game, Westminster prevailed over a scrappy and talented team from NMH.  Connor Janson ’13 (game ball) scored twice, including the game-winner with 2:05 remaining, and Westminster’s defense held tough at crunch time, including some big saves by Angelo Hunt ’14.
 
Third Boys’ Lacrosse
The Martlets earned the win in a close, defensive battle against Loomis. After a 2-2 tie at the half, the big goal of the game came from Chris Connal ’16, as he dodged and managed to beat four Pelicans for a highlight goal to cap off the game. The Martlets needed big saves from Duncan Kellogg ’15 in the final minutes of the game to keep the lead.

First Boys’ Tennis
The First Boys’ Tennis team visited Kent school and came away with a 6-1 victory. The boys got off to a strong start with a 1-0 lead, winning the doubles with close 9-7 scores at No. 1, Charlie Russell ’14 and Harry Ganek ’14, and at No. 2, Andrew Bell ’14 and Rob Mulholland ’15. The team won five of the singles matches with Stephen Cox ’14 and Andrew Bell ’14 winning in super-tiebreaks. Other singles scores included Ganek winning 6-3,6-2, Mulholland winning 6-4,6-4 and Stephen McCormick ’14 winning 6-3,6-3.
 
Second Girls’ Lacrosse
The Martlets notched two more wins against K-O and Hotchkiss.  In a good team effort against the Wyverns, Thiele Schroeder ’14 and Emily Mell ’14 each had two goals for the Martlets. Anne Bitterli ’16, Cricket diGaloma ’14, Sarah Melanson ’16, Katie Simeon ’16 and Emma Merlin ’16 each added a goal. Evie Pope ’16 had a strong game in goal with more than five saves.  They played “smart lacrosse” against the Bearcats of Hotchkiss to win 14-8. Ten different players found the back of the net: Captain Mell led the team with three goals; and Nina Wilmerding ’15 and Georgia Morley ’15 each had two. Timely saves by Pope and tenacious defensive play highlighted by several impressive interceptions by Katherine Berry ’16 and strong transitional play by Kate Breed ’15 capped off the team’s stellar efforts.
 
First Baseball
The baseball team played exceptionally well in a 9-1 defeat of K-O.  Will Lammey’13 pitched a complete game and relinquished but one run over the seven-inning contest.  He struck out three and gave up just five hits.  Lammey was two for three at the plate and crossed home three times in the contest.  Tyler Buckley ’15 was stellar at the plate with a double and two singles.  Other big performances came from Alex Tomashoff  ’16 (two doubles and a single) and Toby Casper ’14 (three singles). Baseball also defeated Kent this weekend by a score of 5-3.  John Dowling ’14 was outstanding on the mound going eight and two-thirds innings while striking out six and serving up 19 fly ball outs.  Offense was provided by two hit performances by Drew Leach ’13, Mike McNally ’14 and Scott Williams ’16. It was an exciting contest down to the last pitch of the game and a great win for the Martlet squad.
 
First Softball
The Martlets finished off their season with three wins including a victory over Choate in the Western New England Championship game.  After a big win against Hopkins, Westminster faced Suffield in the tournament semifinals. Amanda Savino ’14 struck out 10 in a close, hard-fought game.  The Martlets jumped out to a quick lead as Jordan Gowdy ’14 singled and Rachel Monroe ’14 hit a two-run homer in the first inning.  In the fifth, Hayley Ahouse ’13 led off with a triple and scored on Gowdy’s RBI single.  Rachel Monroe ’14 blasted an RBI double for a 5-1, lead but Suffield came charging back to shrink the difference to 5-4. Westminster closed the door on a seventh-inning rally as Savino struck out a Suffield batter with runners on first and second.  Defensively, Gowdy caught a terrific game for the Black and Gold.  In the 11-1 win over Choate, Savino pitched a great game, allowing only three Choate base hits. Monroe had three hits and three runs batted in. Brooke Wolejko had two triples, and Gowdy had two doubles.  Kat Pate ’14 had two hits. It was the fifth championship for Westminster Softball in the past six years. 
 
First Girls’ Lacrosse
In a close win over K-O, Eliza Christman ’15, Mary French ’15 and Alex Regan ’13 each scored to put the Martlets up 3-1, but K-O tied the game. Down by a deficit of 5-3 at half, the Martlets fought their way back into the game. Annie French ’13 scored and Mary French tied it up. K-O went ahead, but Westminster did not give up and instead worked tirelessly to dominate the play. Katie O'Connor ’15 tied the game and Annie French scored off a beautiful set play to pull the Martlets ahead 7-6. With seconds left, Tori DeAngelis ’14 earned the final goal to finish the game 8-6.
 
Second Golf
The Martlets finished their season with a solid performance and a 205 to 232 victory over the Winged Beavers of Avon. Addison Cilmi ’16 took medalist honors shooting an impressive two over par 38. Brett Roenick ’16 and Bryson Tomcik ’15 were close behind both firing a fine 39. Other Black and Gold scores included Will Swanson ’15 (45), Teddy Sirbaugh ’16 (45) and Sebastian Aboitiz ’14 (44).
 
Second Boys’ Tennis
The Martlets won a close match against Avon 4-3. After Westminster won the doubles point, they had to eke out three singles matches. Asante Asiedu ’13 was down 1-3 and 4-5 before winning three straight games to earn the Martlets their first singles point at No. 4. At No. 6, Mark Pfister ’14 was forced into a third set tie-breaker, which he won 10-6 with strong serving and good consistent groundstrokes. This left Mario Benicky ’14 to secure the victory, winning 7-5 in the second for the fourth and decisive point.
